Red Brick To Propose Data Warehousing Benchmark
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Tuesday, February 25, 1997

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A., 1997 FEB 24 (NB) via Individual Inc. -- By
Jacqueline Emigh. Deeming the industry's only existing benchmark for data
warehousing "irrelevant," officials of Red Brick Systems plan to propose a
new test suite.
In a conference call with Newsbytes, Steve O'Brien, Red Brick's director of
product marketing, noted that the existing benchmark, known as TPC-D
(Transaction Processing Performance Council-D), was developed by the TPC,
an organization oriented to OLTP (online transaction processing).
As such, O'Brien asserted, the TPC-D is "inappropriate" to real world
conditions, because organizations do not typically use the same database
for transaction processing and complex query applications.
"The TPC-D benchmark test requires you to conduct transaction processing
simultaneously with complex query processing -- and this is something that
is never really done," the product marketing director told Newsbytes.
"TPC-D also specifies specific schema, meaning that it excludes many
innovative technologies, such as MDDS (multidimensional database systems),
Sybase IQ, and Red Brick Warehouse," he asserted.
Transaction processing places different kinds of demands on a database than
the complex query processing used in decision support (DDS), according to
O'Brien.
To illustrate, the Red Brick exec used an airline as an example. Airlines
carry out transaction processing around the clock, performing a new
database transaction each time a ticket is sold.
But airline sales and marketing staffers generally have their own database
for data mining applications, he told Newsbytes.
"For instance, you might ask to see the names of "frequent flyers" with
50,000 miles under their belts, but who haven't flown for the past two
months," O'Brien said.
If an airline used the same database for transaction processing and complex
queries, the database would get overloaded each time a query was entered,
he reasoned.
In addition, a complex query database typically contains historic data, and
is set up differently from a transaction processing database for the
performance of different tasks.
Tasks conducted by the data warehouse include: extraction, transformation,
and cleansing; data modeling; middleware connectivity; database loading;
query reporting tools; and RDBMS (relational database management system)
for query processing and "user/data scalability."
The TPC has done an excellent job of establishing benchmarks for the
transaction processing industry, according to O'Brien. "But now, a
benchmark is needed which is specifically designed for complex queries,
just as the TPC benchmarks are designed for transaction processing."
The TPC itself acknowledges the limitations of the TPC-D benchmark, in the
preamble to the TPC-D, according to the Red Brick exec.
In the preamble to the benchmark, the TPC writes: "This benchmark does not
reflect the entire range of decision support requirement. In addition, the
extent to which a customer can achieve the results reported by a vendor is
highly dependent on how closely TPC-D approximates the customer
application. Extrapolations to any other environment are not recommended."
Meanwhile, O'Brien charged, some of the many database vendors now
converging on the data warehousing industry have been "confusing the public
and avoiding the real issues" with jargon such as object/relational,
operational data store, and spatial data.
"The main issue is performance, as measured in (query) response time. How
long does it take for me to get the information back, after I hit the
return key? I should get it back right away, not several hours later," he
maintained.
Some of the other criteria important in data warehousing include:
scalability to large numbers of users; performance during the batch load
process used to populate the warehouse, initially and incrementally;
advanced indexing; flexibility; and data administration and management.
Red Brick is meeting with industry analysts for their review of its
proposed new benchmark for the data warehousing industry, O'Brien said.
An independent outside company will be used to conduct the benchmark suite,
and the test will be open to all other database vendors, as well.
The new benchmark proposal will be announced later this week at DCI's Data
Warehouse Conference in Orlando, Florida.
Red Brick plans to publish the initial results of its own performance on
the new benchmark in the second quarter concurrent with the release of Red
Brick Warehouse 5.0.
"Our goals are to eliminate confusion about what is needed for complex DSS;
to provide better information for companies evaluating data warehouse
technology; and to demonstrate the value of specialized technology for data
warehousing values," O'Brien told Newsbytes.
"But what we are not trying to do is just as important. We are absolutely
not trying to `fix' the entire database industry. We do not want to form a
new standards organization. We are not trying to `demonize' the TPC-D, and
we're not trying to define a benchmark that only we can do well on," he
contended.
Red Brick's proposed data warehousing evaluation criteria, Performance
Criteria for Data Warehouse Databases, will be available by calling
