DIGITAL AND BEA FORM WORLDWIDE TECHNOLOGY PARTNERSHIP
TO DELIVER UNIVERSAL MIDDLEWARE INFRASTRUCTURE
Companies Collaborate to Develop and Distribute Products
MAYNARD, Mass. and SUNNYVALE, Calif., February 18, 1997 --
Digital Equipment Corporation and BEA Systems, Inc. today extend their
long-standing relationship by announcing a major strategic technology and
distribution partnership to simplify the development and deployment of
distributed, mission-critical applications.
This worldwide collaboration will provide the first industry-standard,
cross-platform universal middleware infrastructure, and brings together the
leading products in distributed transaction middleware, object technology,
and message-oriented middleware.
Under terms of the agreement, DIGITAL and BEA will work together to
deliver a broad, integrated middleware portfolio, created from their
respective industry-leading software components. BEA will acquire DIGITAL's
ObjectBroker, DECmessageQ, and related software technology, making BEA the
only complete, cross-platform provider of open middleware. This
transaction is pending U.S. Government approval.
BEA also will provide its market-leading BEA TUXEDO product on
DIGITAL's OpenVMS platform in addition to the DIGITAL UNIX, and Windows NT
platforms already supported by BEA. All of DIGITAL's platforms will be
first-tier ports for BEA's products.
To further underscore the importance of this partnership, DIGITAL will
assume an equity position in BEA, and will make a direct engineering
development investment in ObjectBroker and DECmessageQ on DIGITAL Alpha
platforms.
DIGITAL also will continue to develop underlying distributed systems
software, provide interoperability between the joint DIGITAL/BEA work and
corresponding Microsoft Corporation technologies, and optimize these products
on DIGITAL's UNIX, OpenVMS, and Windows NT platforms. In addition, both
companies will expand marketing, sales, and distribution of BEA TUXEDO,
ObjectBroker, and DECmessageQ.
This arrangement expands the multi-platform offering for these
products, and ensures their continued individual availability and evolution
for existing and future customers.
The fundamental technologies required for creating and integrating
distributed business applications across the enterprise or over the Internet
include transaction processing, object-based, and message-oriented solutions.
Today, organizations developing and deploying mission-critical systems find
that no single middleware technology addresses their complete enterprise
application needs.
This extended partnership directly addresses these requirements for
a simplified enterprise application environment by bringing BEA TUXEDO,
ObjectBroker, and DECmessageQ together so that DIGITAL and BEA are now
delivering the full range of required middleware functionality for solving
complex business application needs.
"The partnership between DIGITAL and BEA indicates the strong,
continuing commitment these two companies have to these technologies," said
Alex Seale, project manager of Credit Risk Management System at Banque Paribas
in London. "Their integrated middleware vision lays out a powerful direction
for ObjectBroker, DECmessageQ, and BEA TUXEDO -- one that we can take as a
serious commitment to supporting my company's success."
"The partnership between BEA and DIGITAL comes at a critical time in
the evolving marriage between legacy systems, the Internet, and the explosion
of distributed object computing," said Christopher Stone, CEO, Object
Management Group. "A robust object-based transaction model (BEA TUXEDO),
coupled with DIGITAL's ObjectBroker (CORBA/IIOP) and DECmessageQ, sends a
clear message to the financial services and transaction-oriented enterprises
that they mean serious business. This was a smart, savvy move, and a
partnership to bet the bank on."
"The technology collaboration between BEA and DIGITAL will yield a
portfolio of mission-critical middleware that takes full advantage of Network
Computing Architecture (NCA)," said Mark Jarvis, vice president, Server
Marketing, Oracle Corporation. "DIGITAL and BEA are both long-time partners
of Oracle's, and we look forward to working with both companies as they
implement this strategy."
Don Harbert, vice president, UNIX Business Segment, Digital Equipment
Corporation, said, "This extended partnership with BEA significantly
strengthens our mutual commitment to supply our customers with the best
multi-platform middleware products in the market today. BEA now becomes
our premier partner in developing multi-platform enterprise middleware
for UNIX, OpenVMS, and other heterogeneous environments."
Bill Coleman, chairman and CEO of BEA Systems, Inc., said, "This
announcement marks the further execution of our original mission - to provide
an enterprise middleware infrastructure for distributed mission-critical
applications. By combining the scalability and application management
functionality of BEA TUXEDO with robust message queuing middleware and an
enterprise-class ORB (Object Request Broker), we can provide our customers
with a single, integrated product suite that addresses all of their middleware
requirements. We are pleased to be working closely with DIGITAL to make this
solution available to the market."
BEA Systems, Inc. is a leading provider of cross-platform middleware
solutions for enterprise applications. BEA's products enable mission-critical,
distributed applications that work seamlessly in client/server, Internet, and
legacy environments. BEA provides a transactional and messaging software
platform based on BEA TUXEDO for developing and deploying these enterprise
applications. In addition to its product line, BEA provides complete solutions
through its extensive partner network and broad range of professional
services. BEA is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, with offices around
the globe. Additional information on BEA is available on the Internet at

DIGITAL Enhances Scalability, Management of Its
Windows NT Solutions
Announces Windows NT Support for AlphaServer 8000 Systems;
Adds ServerWORKS Features; First to Enable SAP R/3 on Windows NT
for Both Alpha and Intel
MAYNARD, Mass., May 13, 1997 -- Digital Equipment Corporation, the
leading supplier of enterprise-wide Windows NT solutions, today
announced improved scalability, enhanced systems management, and
broader application support for Windows NT-based environments.
Specifically, the company announced:
* Availability of the Windows NT operating system on Digital's
flagship AlphaServer 8400 and 8200 systems, with support for
up to eight 440-MHz Alpha processors and 8GB of memory.
These systems will be available to early adopters beginning
this summer.
* ServerWORKS 3.0, a suite of software manageability and
ease-of-use tools designed to integrate, manage and deploy
Windows NT solutions in heterogeneous environments at all
levels. ServerWORKS manages Digital servers running
multiple operating systems, clients and network devices,
while integrating and complementing existing software
management solutions.
* The industry's first support and management of the SAP R/3
system in a mixed RISC and Intel environment.
"Once again, Digital is re-emphasizing its dominance in
providing customers the broadest range of Windows NT solutions,"
said Mike Gallup, Digital vice president of worldwide systems
marketing. "Digital's range of entry-level to high-end platforms,
systems management capabilities, and burgeoning third-party Windows
NT applications portfolio make it more clear than ever to customers
that Digital is the premier choice for addressing Windows NT
challenges."
World's Most Powerful, Scalable Windows NT Server
The availability of Windows NT on the AlphaServer 8400 and 8200
systems completes the deployment of Windows NT across the entire
AlphaServer line of systems from the AlphaServer 300 and the new
AlphaServer 800 workgroup systems, to the AlphaServer 1000A
departmental systems, the AlphaServer 4100 and 4000 families, and
now the world's most powerful Windows NT systems, the AlphaServer
8400 and 8200 systems.
Customers in mid-size and large companies are striving to
combine the best aspects of client-server technology with the higher
level of manageability, service, and support required in complex
enterprise-wide solutions. Increasingly, they are looking to
Windows-NT based systems to play a larger role in these
applications. ServerWORKS and AlphaServer 8400 systems with Windows
NT give users the power and flexibility they need to meet these
challenges today and far into the future.
Microsoft also will support 64-bit data in the Windows NT
operating systems for customers that require efficient access to
extremely large databases. Microsoft's 64-bit Windows NT will
initially support the Alpha platform and will be available as a beta
release before the end of the year.
AlphaServer 8400 and 8200 systems are ideally suited for
enterprise applications such as data warehousing and decision
support, manufacturing and financial applications, high-performance
technical computing, telecommunications, large-scale database
management, and large-capacity Internet server applications.
The announcement of the ability of the AlphaServer 8000 family
to run Windows NT expands the capabilities of Windows NT to
implement the most demanding enterprise-class applications. When
combined with proven, enterprise software capabilities such as
Digital's ACMSxp. The X-Open standard transaction definition
language for transaction, processing (TP), and Reliable Transaction
Router (RTR) for wide availability, AlphaServer 8000 systems provide
a complete enterprise environment today.
Performance tests confirm that an AlphaServer 8400 running
Windows NT 4.0 and SQL Server 6.5, and Cheyenne ARCServe backup
software provide off-line database backup at a rate of 240 GB/hour,
while consuming less than 20% of CPU power. This test result is a
quantum leap ahead of previous NT backup "high-water marks" of 5-20
GB/hour.
ServerWORKS Version 3.0
New features in ServerWORKS Version 3.0 include remote
serviceability (including enhanced alert capabilities) and tight
integration with Digital's ClientWORKS, delivering a desktop-
management interface (DMI)-based solution for tighter management of
client platforms. ServerWORKS 3.0 is an easy-to-use solution,
combining an intuitive user interface with a Windows look-and-feel,
as well as a self-contained tutorial and on-line help.
The ServerWORKS 3.0 family includes ServerWORKS Quick Launch
for fast, consistent, and accurate installation of network operating
systems, and ServerWORKS Manager, a scalable solution providing
SNMP-based management capabilities for servers and LANs. ServerWORKS
3.0 is bundled with all Digital Prioris and AlphaServer systems, and
is available on June 7. For existing customers, the upgrade price
is $99.
Mixed Environment Support of SAP R/3 System
"Only Digital offers customers the advantages of Windows NT
running on both a RISC platform - Alpha -- and Intel platform," said
Toni Steiner, Digital's worldwide SAP Business Manager. "With a
central R/3 database machine, customers can receive the benefits of
a configuration that features the cost-effective Intel application
server and Digital's high-performance AlphaServer system both
running the same Windows NT operating system."
"We are delighted that Digital will support such configurations
for Windows NT," said Christa Koppe, SAP's Alliance Manager to
Digital. "This demonstrates Digital's solid commitment to our R/3
system and Windows NT. It also underscores to our customers the fact
that they have a secure growth path for their R/3 solutions on
Microsoft Windows NT."
Digital Equipment Corporation is a world leader in open client/
server solutions, from personal computing to integrated worldwide
information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha and Intel platforms,
storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-
focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete
and win in today's global marketplace. See also: www.digital.com

costs. Digital is the premier service and support partner in Microsoft's
Service Advantage Program.
Highest-Scaling, Fastest Systems to Run Windows NT
For the first time, Windows NT will be available on the world's most
powerful server platform Digital's flagship AlphaServer 8000 family, which
includes the 8200 and 8400 models. The AlphaServer 8000 family shatters the
performance barriers of conventional Windows NT computing. Windows NT
customers will benefit from breakthrough power and scalability for such
critical business applications as data warehousing, decision support,
manufacturing, finance, Internet and transaction processing. Early adopters
of these systems will begin receiving systems beginning this summer.
Digital now offers solutions for Windows NT across the entire range of its
Prioris Intel-based servers and AlphaServer systems, from workgroup servers
to departmental systems. Microsoft's forthcoming 64-bit Windows NT
operating system will be supported first on the Digital Alpha platform.
Streamlined Enterprise Systems Management
For sophisticated, distributed Windows NT environments, Digital offers
unmatched scalability options from Intel-based mobile and desktop systems
to higher-performing Intel servers and Alpha-based personal workstations
and data center-class servers. With the new version of ServerWORKS
announced today, customers can proactively control and manage enterprise
Windows NT environments at all levels. ServerWORKS 3.0 is a suite of
software tools that manages multivendor servers, networks, clients, hubs,
routers and switches while integrating and complementing existing software
management software.
ServerWORKS 3.0 is bundled with all Digital Prioris and AlphaServer Windows
NT systems and includes remote alarming, management and diagnostic
capabilities. This enables administrators to take preventative measures
before a mission-critical problem occurs.
Next Wave of Affinity Program Targets NT Integration
Digital's Affinity program is helping more than 20,000 customers around the
world integrate Windows NT and Digital's proven, disaster-tolerant 64-bit
OpenVMS operating system. Affinity Wave 4 targets enhanced mail and
messaging integration, World Wide Web access to applications and data,
applications development and network integration.
The enterprise services, products, and more than 70 partnerships of the
Affinity program provide the technological underpinnings for integrating
Windows NT application servers with secure, highly available OpenVMS
servers. By combining these strengths, Digital's Affinity program offers
superior overall functionality and the most complete set of applications
and tools for many large businesses that are testing and deploying Windows
NT.
