I'm currently in the layout mode right now but i'm looking for a couple of ideas from you guys. I'm putting together a take down shooting bench made from 3/4 plywood. It'll be put together via the use of interlocking slotted cutouts (i.e. those plywood deer you see on peoples front lawns at christmas time)... all the pieces are connected vertically with the exception of the bench top and seat, which are in the horizontal plane. I cant figure out how to attach them. i'm trying to stay away from hooks or latches etc... any ideas?? Fra

Well, I would be most concerned about absolute rigidity. I'd make sure the interlocking slots have a wedging action so there is no shake. You may want to think about adding cross braces held with carriage bolts and wing nuts. As far as attaching the top and seat...how about carriage bolts down through the top, going through angle irons screwed to the top edges of the supports, with wing nuts on the bolts? For a shooting bench, if you're doing bench-rest shooting, 3/4" plywood is really pretty flimsy, but if you want it to be portable there are definite limits on how much it can weigh, I suppose. |
