2097.14 | Be careful out there! | TALLIS::PARADIS | There's a feature in my soup! | Tue May 27 1997 15:07 | 30 |
| I guess this is as good a time as any to tell my "Army Surplus" story.
A couple of years back, when Fort Devens was in the process of closing,
I went to the DRMO to check out what might be available. Picked up a
bid list, looked over a few items, then came to the last item on the
list: "Saw, band, woodworking". Gee, I could use that...
Trouble is, I couldn't find it. It was something like lot 653, but the
tagged lots only seemed to go up to 648. Asked around, got directed
to another building. It's the DRMO office. Ask around some more and
a guy comes out to take me down into the warehouse.
"The warehouse" was a factory-sized building with row upon row of
industrial equipment therein. There was this tall thing way in the
back, towering over the rest of the machines. My guide heads in that
direction. "No, can't be", I say to myself. He keeps heading towards
The Tower. I follow. Finally he stops. In front of The Tower.
Granted, this thing was up on a pallet, but it must've been
something like nine feet tall! And about eight feet square.
The blade was over an inch wide. I didn't bother to scrabble
up to measure the throat or depth of cut, but I wouldn't be
surprised if I could resaw some of that 24" Canadian pine on
this thing. Naturally, it took three-phase power. Lots of it,
if I could judge by the heft of the power cable...
I passed on it... while it might make a jim-dandy sawmill, I didn't
have any facility for evacuating it from the premesis....
