1017.0. "V2.2-11 : no answer from ..." by BACHUS::BANKEN () Wed Mar 12 1997 11:32

Hello,

Can someone help me to troubleshoot the 'no answer from' problem.

Consolidator 2.2-11 Alpha Server 1000
Transport : TCP/IP

Node Status Class Version OS Version
  NVQ Enabled APPL_CLASS4 V2.2-11 OpenVMS V6.2-1H2 AXP
  NVP Enabled APPL_CLASS4 V2.2-11 OpenVMS V6.2-1H2 AXP
  NVO Enabled APPL_CLASS4 V2.2-11 OpenVMS V6.2-1H2 AXP
  NVK Enabled APPL_CLASS2 V2.2-03 VMS V6.1 VAX
  NVJ Enabled APPL_CLASS1 V2.2-03 VMS V6.1 VAX
  NVH Enabled APPL_CLASS4 V2.2-11 OpenVMS V6.2-1H2 AXP
  NVG Enabled APPL_CLASS4 V2.2-11 OpenVMS V6.2-1H2 AXP
  NVF Enabled APPL_CLASS3 V2.2-11 OpenVMS V6.2 AXP
  NVE Enabled APPL_CLASS1 V2.2-03 VMS V6.1 VAX
  NVD Enabled APPL_CLASS1 V2.2-03 VMS V6.1 VAX
  NVC Enabled APPL_CLASS1 V2.2-03 VMS V6.1 VAX

no answer from 2 particular agents, one is a VAX (2.2-03) the other is an
Aplha (2.2-11). Network nor system load seem to be the problem.

What is the difference between 'no answer from' and 'unreachable' messages

Thanks in advance,

Alain.

1017.1No answer from... on display => OTH, ORS or UNR in event list.AZUR::HUREZConnectivity & Computing Services @VBE. DTN 828-5159Fri Mar 14 1997 12:5322

The "No answer from <nodename>" message is not an event message.
It is displayed by the Controller continuous display when

o It awaits data from the Consolidator about the currently polled node...
o ... and the Consolidator takes too much time to respond.
(the delay can be tuned using the SNS$SHOW_EVENT_WAITING_DELAY
logical name, which should translate to the wished number of
seconds, the default delay beeing 60s).

Usually, after you get the "No answer from ...." on display, and waited
for N * 60s + delta, where N is the number of non-answering nodes (for
which the connection attempts will timeout) and delta the time
necessary to poll other nodes, you will get the list of event messages
on display. Within that list, the event messages of UNR, ORS or OTH
type concerning the non-answering nodes should be more talkative...

    Best Regards,
