1300.0. "The *new* Second Foundation Trilogy" by SMURF::CCHAPMAN (C) Thu Mar 20 1997 12:10

I just found a SF Review on the net from AMAZON Books. The review (by
Craig E. Engler) is for "The Second Foundation Trilogy" by science
fiction writer Gregory Benford. The review, in part, says:

"... Benford explores the beginnings of the Foundation and its grand
architect, Hari Seldon, covering territory that Asimov left largely
    uncharted."

"That territory has proven fertile ground for Benford who admits in
his afterword that he has always wondered about 'crucial aspects of
Asimov's Empire,' such as why there were no aliens in the galaxy, what
role computers played, and what the theory of psychohistory actually
looked like. And, perhaps most important, who was Hari Seldon, the
man? Benford took on the huge task of answering these questions, and,
difficulty as it may sound, he pulled it off with style."

"In fact, Benford allowed himself the style that Asimov never did
(Asimov's writing could be generously described as 'spare'), reminding
readers that this book is not intended to be what Asimov would have
written. It's a book about Benford's ideas, characters, and stories
that builds upon what Asimov wrote, rather than just continuing it...
Rest assured that Asimov's work is in good hands."

The second and third volumes of the trilogy are due to be released
in March 1998 and March 1999, respectively."

Hmm, not sure how I feel about this ... but I will buy the book.

Actually the new trilogy is being done by three authors.

    Foundation's Fear - Gregory Benford
Foundation and Chaos - Greg Bear
    Third Foundation - David Brin

These three authors were selected by Asimov's estate.

Very interesting review and article in the May 97 'Science Fiction Age'
