1252.0. "How to price my colllection?" by MROA::KLEIN () Tue Oct 18 1994 13:24

I'd like to sell my collection of SF books. I suspect some
are relatively scarce so I'd like to first establish the market
    value for them.

Can anyone suggest a reference or source to help me
establish a fair price for my stuff?

 	thanks-

Check in the bookstores under Hobbies/Collectibles for book price guides. You'll
find they are separated into hardback and paperback. These are usually for first
editions only. The prices are a GUIDE only, giving an indication of what the
same book has sold for elsewhere. There are other variables to consider also,
such as condition (which is an art to figure, really).

Do not take them to the mass market used book stores (we have Half-Price books
here in Texas) - they pay by the pound, basically.

I'd suggest also posting a note in this conference when you've got your prices
down. I'd personally like to see what you've got - send me a note if you don't
want to post.

Good Luck!

Got any Heinlein firsts?

See if you can get in touch with Jerry Boyajian (late of this
conference and this company). I'm sure he'd have plenty of helpful
    advice for you.

In addition, search through this conference for notes by Jerry; I know
he spoke of his own collection somewhere in here.

There is a news group called something like:

    rec.arts.sf.marketplace

    which may help.

If I have got the name wrong, try searching a newsrc file for sf &
    marketplace.

I am currently tring to put togeather a library of collectible Science Fiction
Books. I would be interested in taking a look at your list and your asking
price.

There is a book available that values paperback books; something
like "Guide to Paperback Books" you can order it from most good book
stores. This Book has a value for 3 categories (Bad, OK, Exellent).

Yep. That group is on my listing. I've never read it though (or any
    other news group).

Sorry I'm late on this, Bob, but I'm just back from vacation.

When I liquidated a large collection many years back, I auctioned it
through the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society (LASFS). If there's
a club in your area, Fans are often eager collectors.
