1227.0. "Total Recall" by ZPOVC::RAHULMEHTA () Mon May 30 1994 06:58

    How come nobody mentioned the SF movie Total Recall?

    I DIR searched for the title and keyword without success.

    Well, I think it was a good movie. A fast moving story with a SF touch
    besides just happening in future. I am also a fan of Mr. Arnold and
    generally like his action packed films.

    In this movie, I liked the general idea of altering the memory to
    produce total recall of events at a later time. The rest of the action
    in the movie delt well with the effects of such altered memory. In the
    end the question remains whether the story was just a memory or the
    real experience?

    I have seen the movie a long time ago and only once. So I do not
    remember any further detail about the director, author or even the
    character names. BAD recall I have. But I enjoyed the movie enough to
    go through it again. I also would like to read the book, if any one can
    guide me by the name of the author.

    There is quite a long discussion of "Total Recall" in note 172 of

    interested in the movie.

1227.6Movie is better or the book?ZPOVC::RAHULMEHTASun Jun 05 1994 21:3725
    Thanks guys. You did remember it for me Wholesale.

    I saw the movie discussion (.5). My point in the original note was that
    this being a SF movie, this is the right place for it to be mentioned.

    I found an anthology of short stories by Dick in the local public
    library. I finished the story in 15 minutes (it is that short!). I
    enjoyed the story thoroughly. The movie took off in a different
    direction after the first half of the story and ended up being a nice
    SF thriller. The story moves deeper into the memory of the protagonist
    (Douglas Quail) and springs another surprise. I liked the movie as a
    thriller and the story for its novel twist.

    The twist in the story is like a Mobius strip put in words. Halfway
    through the story completes a round and gets almost to the starting
    point. Well, it is not the starting point and it takes you for another
    round and by the time it gets back to the starting point it revels a
    kind of dead lock which saves Quail from being exicuted.

    I also liked the theme idea of memory implants. Just think about what
    will happen to the education system. "Honey, I will be home late this
    evening. I am picking up a PhD in Astrophysics."
