the main reason I watch it.

B-movie fans will recognize Bruce Campell ( Brisco County Jr. ) as the
lead dude from the Evil Dead movies ( including the damn-near-perfect
Army of Darkness "Shop smart. Shop S-Mart" ) Whadda guy :-)
I guess I'll have to reprogram the VCR to catch the X-files, too - I
summarily dismissed it as a one topic Inside Edition/Hardcopy type
trash tv show. Silly me!

| I enjoy the show, but I wish the writers would work a little harder
sometimes. The "Thing"-clone episode had some good elements, but fell
flat for me - the plot twists and resolution were a little too pat, I
thought, and the story had enough meat to it that it could have used
more exposition to really develop the suspense. Oh, I still enjoyed it,
but (perhaps because I _do_ like it and want it to be "the best that it
can be," if you'll pardon the expression) I think it could do with
better "story" sometimes. [Last week's episode, about the "haunted"
astronaut, was a prime example of a weak story held up by some pretty
good character acting. (Since the actor in question has a face that
really does look kind of like that "Face on Mars," it made the "ghost"
scenes rather eerie, but on the whole it didn't make any sense.) *I*
think it would have been a much better story if the viewers had gotten
no definite evidence that there was a real "entity" involved, and had
had to wonder whether the astronaut had encountered something weird out
there or had simply gone nuts. Not every case they touch has to be
an X-file...]
In general, I enjoy the setup - an anthology series with continuing
characters (rather like the "Friday the Thirteenth" series, which I
also enjoyed), a team of competent people who don't always agree on
things but who complement each other in an investigation, a man and a
woman who respect each other as individuals and who (so far!) haven't
been put into the too-often-obligatory "budding romance"... I like it.
Now, if they could just work a teensy bit on those stories. [And they'd
better watch the number of "former FBI friends who are now climbing the
ladder of success and trampling their buddies on the way" subplots;
they've used it at least twice now, with two different ladder-climbers,
and it's only the first season.]
Hey, maybe they could do a cross-over show with "Missing Persons". "Why
are all these missing people turning up three years later with amnesia
and some odd moles on their backs? And who are these two FBI agents who
keep showing up?" ;-)

| Well, I've watched it a few times and I've always attributed the plot
holes to the show being based loosely on files that actually exist.

| The show holds no promise for me.
Based as it seems to be on the existence of a conspiracy to hide the truth,
it is locked into the impossibility of revealing a truth without killing
the series. Even Dr. Kimble didn't get to keep his show after he caught
the one-armed man.
You're supposed to know that something is behind the curtain, and you
know won't be shown it.
Thus it is implicitly unsatisfying.
Give this show one season, max.

here, but grad school and imperfect recall have prevented me from
doing it yet. But if anyone who has been taping regularly feels they
want to help me out by sending me info or tapes... If not, it'll grow
slowly as the re-runs are shown.

_The X-Files_ is a FOX show created by Chris Carter dealing
with 2 FBI agents who work with the "X-Files," cases which could not
be explained easily and often involve the paranormal. The show
premiered on September 10, 1993. The show has been picked up for a
complete 22 episode season.

them. Her doctorate is in medicine.
Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny)
Agent Fox Mulder is one of the FBI's greatest detectives as
his background as a psychologist helped him to profile many serial
killers. His interest in the paranormal made him dig into the X-Files
and also gave some higher officials in the bureau cause to believe him
eccentric, reinforcing the nickname "Spooky" which he received in the
academy. His fascination with extraterrestial life began in his childhood
when his sister disappeared - Fox claims she was abducted by aliens.

Head of the Violent Crimes division of the FBI. He shows up on
occasion when his cases are also of interest to Mulder.
Section Chief Joseph McGrath ()
Head of the Office of Professional Responsibility and is the

Mulder. He constantly searches for a reason to get rid of Mulder.
"Deep Throat" (Jerry Hardin)
This mysterious man first appeared to warn Mulder about Ellens
Air Force Base. He has worked his way into Mulder's trust, exchanging
information for Mulder's silence. He clearly has some influence
throughout the government and one wonders if his intentions towards
Mulder are benevolent or much more sinister.

1.1 Pilot: "The X-Files" 9/10/93
Dr. Scully is given the assignment to watch over the activities of
a certain Agent Mulder and decide if his work is worthwhile to the FBI. He
takes her to investigate the murder of several high school students in
Oregon whom he believes have been experimented on by aliens.
1.2 "Deep Throat" 9/17/93
Mulder and Scully head out to Ellens Air Force Base in Idaho, against
the wishes of some very mysterious and powerful people. The investigation
begins with the disappearance of one of the test pilots and leads to the
implication of possible experimentation of UFOs by the military.
1.3 "Squeeze" 9/24/93
A gruesome murder without motive, clear M.O., or point of entry
bears resemblance to an X-File killer. However, the X-File cases took place
in 1933 and 1963. Mulder and Scully attempt to track down and stop this
century old killer.
1.4 "Conduit" 10/1/93
A woman who claims to have seen a UFO as a child has her teenage
daughter disappear while on a camping trip. The signs seem to indicate
alien involvement. But the key to solving the mystery may be the woman's
young son instead of the missing daughter.
1.5 "The Jersey Devil" 10/8/93
The discovery of a cannibalized human body in New Jersey State Park
sends Mulder and Scully to Atlantic City. But, despite obvious police
cover-ups, Mulder continues the investigation of what may be a missing link
in human evolution. Meanwhile, Scully attends her god-son's birthday party,
which leads to some reflection of her future social plans.
1.6 "Shadows" 10/22/93
When two very odd corpses appear in Philadelphia, Mulder and
Scully are requested to take a look at them. The investigation leads to a
secretary whose employer recently committed suicide and a strange force
which seems to protect her.
1.7 "Ghost in the Machine" 10/29/93
When a computer company's CEO is electrocuted, Mulder's old partner
asks for help with the case. With the advice of Deep Throat, Mulder and
Scully must stop the murderer all the while fighting off the defense
department and the building itself.
1.8 "Ice" 11/5/93
When the Arctic Ice Core project's final transmission is a crazed
scientist saying "We are not who we are," Mulder and Scully become part of
an investigative team sent to the Alaskan site. Upon arrival, they
discover that the unearthing of an unearthly parasite could spell trouble
for them as well.
1.9 "Space" 11/12/93
When a space shuttle launch is aborted and evidence of some bizarre
sabotage is found, a NASA worker asks Mulder and Scully to take a look
around. Meanwhile, the former astronaut who is in charge of the mission is
apparently haunted by something he encountered during a spacewalk on a
previous mission.
1.10 "Fallen Angel" 11/19/93
Mulder is tipped off by Deep Throat about a government cover-up of
a UFO crash site. He is not the only one interested, as he discovers a
fellow UFO enthusiast whose appearance seems rather coincidental. Meanwhile
the military tries to keep Mulder away and bring a certain other being in.
But when he is discovered, Mulder's position in the FBI is jeopardized.
1.11 "Eve" 12/10/93
Mulder and Scully travel to see a family whose child fears she is
being hunted by aliens. But someone may have replaced the child from under
their nose.

An old flame of Mulder's tries to enlist his aid to protect a
visiting Parliament member and causes a small spark of jealousy in Scully.
Mulder must overcome his fear of fire to take on the hot-headed pyrokinetic
serial killer.

_The X Files_ is a television series dealing with two FBI agents. Fox
Mulder and Dana Scully, in the Bureau's Violent Crimes section. They
work with the "X files," cases that have unexplainable elements and
often involve the paranormal.
/Production Notes/
The series was created by Chris Carter. Executive producers for the
show include Carter, Glen Morgan and James Wong, and R.W. Goodwin. The
show's supervising producers are Alex Ganza and Howard Gordon.
There will be 24 episodes this season, and the show has been
picked up for 25 episodes for the 1994-95 season.

/Deep Background-Fox Mulder/
Agent Fox Mulder, an Oxford-trained psychologist, is one of the FBI
Violent Crimes division's best agents, although he is in disfavor with
not only his superiors but also his colleagues because of his interest
in the Bureau's X files. (He picked up the nickname of "Spooky" during
his training at the FBI Academy.) [Pilot] His fascination with the
paranormal stems from a childhood incident -- his sister disappeared
from their home in Chilmarc, Mass. (pop. 650) when he was 12 and she
was 8. Mulder claims she was abducted by aliens; during regressions he
recalled hearing his sister's cries for help, and a bright light which
kept him paralyzed and told him that his sister would be all right.
[Conduit]
Mulder's early meteoric rise at the Bureau has enabled him to
make high-placed friends in Congress. These contacts keeep him from
retribution from higher-ups, although they have assigned him a
partner, with the tacit idea of discrediting what he does so that he
can be dismissed. However, Mulder has picked up an apparent ally in a
mysterious government official known as Deep Throat. [Deep Throat,
Fallen Angel, Eve, Young at Heart]
We believe Mulder doesn't "have a life," as we have seen
nothing of his off-duty activities. However, some of this may stem
from a relationship he had at Oxford ten years ago with a woman who is
now with Scotland Yard (Phoebe Green [Fire]). He apparently was in
love with her, but she not with him.
Mulder has a fear of fire [Fire], which may have been
conquered during his rescue of the children of British MP Sir Malcolm
Marsden (who also happened to be Phoebe's latest fling). He is also a
fan of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). [Space]
Mulder has a habit of eating unshelled sunflower seeds, and
making droll comments which X-philers have come to note as
"Mulderisms." (Angelia Derrick, [email protected], is keeping a list
of Mulderisms and Scullyisms.)
/Deep Background - Dana Scully/
Dana Scully is a medical doctor with an undergraduate degree in
physics. She was recruited for the FBI right out of medical school,
and had been teaching at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. She was
assigned by Section Chief Scott Blevins to be Mulder's partner in
order to keep an eye on him and determine whether he is perhaps too
obsessed with the X files.
Scully is skeptical of anything paranormal, believing that
everything has a logical, scientifically-quantified explanation.
Though in most of the cases she and Mulder have been on she has not
witnessed any overt paranormal activities, she has had two brushes
with unexplainable phenomena that may have her start questioning her
beliefs [Beyond the Sea; Lazarus]. Only time -- and future episodes --
will tell.
Scully's father died early in 1994 (?); they were apparently
close at one time (she called him Ahab; he called her Starbuck), but
her father disapproved of her joining the Bureau. [Beyond the Sea] She
had a yearlong relationship with an instructor at the Academy, Jack
Willis, with whom she shared the same birthdate (Feb. 23). [Lazarus]
She is just as much a workaholic as Mulder, and is currently not
seeing anyone [Jersey Devil].
Scully has hazel eyes and auburn hair.

Section Chief Joseph McGrath (Frederick Coffin) is head of the

some sort of higher-up government official. He first warned Mulder not
to take an assignment [Deep Throat] but has since helped the agent on
a case [Eve] as well as fed him classified information for an

remain anonymous; Scully knows nothing of him. Mulder can apparently

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Gillian Anderson has made believers out of
fans of ``The X-Files.''
Anderson, who stars in the Fox TV series as an FBI agent
assigned to cases with an otherworldly aura, may not be convincing
viewers that UFOs or mutant serial killers really are out there.
But she's helped prove that a television role that allows a
woman to be smart, professional, and the equal of her male partner
does exist.
The chance to play FBI Special Agent Dana Scully was the
series' key attraction, Anderson says.
``The X-Files,'' a surreal blend of crime-busting and science
fiction, airs at 9 p.m. (EST) on Fridays.
``I was reading something that for the first time in a long
time involved a strong, independent intelligent woman as a lead
character,'' she said by telephone from Vancouver, British Columbia,
where the show films.
``I've gotten quite a few letters from young girls saying I'm
a role model, and this is probably one of the best compliments I could
get as an actor,'' Anderson said.
``It's terrific because of what the character represents:
honesty, justice, hard work and dedication and passion -- and if
that's what they're tapping into, that's fantastic.''
The petite, red-haired actress has yet to come to grips with
her own sudden status as a TV heroine. Trained in the theater, she
stepped before a camera for only the third time when she filmed ``The
X-Files'' pilot episode.
``Let me tell you about tension and stress,'' Anderson
recalls. ``I was a mess. It's taken me a while, and I'm still learning
every single day I work.''
The 5-month-old series, which co-stars David Duchovny as agent
Fox Mulder, has been deemed a success by the network in a tough Friday
time slot. It's been renewed for next season.
``I had a very good feeling that this show would be
successful,'' Anderson says. ``But I don't think it's really even hit
me yet. Once in a while I'll be driving down the street in Canada and
think, `I'm in Canada. How did I get here?'''
The show's long work hours and location also have conspired to
keep the 25-year-old from feeling the full impact of jumping from TV
unknown to series lead.
``I'm not out much,'' Anderson says. ``I work and I go home. I
work on the scripts. I wake up and come to work. And in between I try
to get my bills paid.''
(She did find time to marry since beginning the series, but
has put a ``classified material'' label on any details)
The very polite Canadians who recognize her from the show,
which airs there, tend to keep their distance, Anderson says. But even
discreet recognition can be unnerving to a fledgling TV star.
``There is something vulnerable about being in the public eye,
to a certain degree,'' she says. ``Having that feeling, hearing
`Scully' whispered as you pass people. It reminds you constantly that
you're not in your private little world.''
Despite a bit of sexual tension between Scully and Mulder,
don't expect the series to forsake action for romance.
``The show's not about that,'' Anderson says. ``We have a good
rapport on film together. I think to tamper with something that's not
broken is perhaps a mistake.''

John Doe, Alias Deep Throat

During November 1993, it came to this agent's attention through
reliable channels that two of our agents (names withheld barring
verification) have been investigating questionable incidents in the
United States, often without jurisdiction, and in flagrant violation
of this Agency's rules. Due to the mysterious nature of these
incidents, however, it was decided to allow these unorthodox
investigations to commence.
Through these same channels, it has come to this agent's
attention that one of our agents has been meeting, clandestinally,
with an informant. Any attempts to ascertain this individual's
identity have been subverted. The only known piece of information at
this time is that he is referred to as "Deep Throat."
It is because of the nature of these incidents, and of the
mysterious nature of this information that this investigation was
openned. It is unsanctioned by FOX Broadcasting Network, who retains
all rights to the names, data, and events in this document. Further,
this is a work based on fictitious information, names, and dates.
Caveat Agent, or reader, as it were.
According to an investigation launched by this Agent, the
following information is known about John Doe, alias Deep Throat. This
information is from conflicting reports, so some of the information is
highly suspect, and some is speculation.
This file is the sum of my knowledge of the subject, and will be
updated as neccessary. Other agents with information regarding Deep
Throat are requested to forward this information to me with all haste.
As of 22 FEB 1994, the following information has become available
to me concerning Deep Throat (DT):
1. DT worked for the CIA during Vietnam.
2. DT belongs to the organization that assassinated Kennedy,
maintained the Cold War, and kept the Vietnam War going. My guess
is that this organization is a clandestine offshoot of the CIA.
3. A. DT has at least Top Secret clearance, or is in such a
position as not need clearance.
B. DT is _very_ well connected in the government, if not a
member/employee himself.
This is known because DT provided Mulder with transcripts
of the conversation between the Iraqi pilot and the Air Traffic
Controllers less than 48 hours after the conversation took
place. Further, it can be concluded that DT is connected with
the top officials in the government. In all likeliness, the
President is not involved. DT probably has contacts throughout
the government. In fact, one might surmise that DT has contacts
worldwide.
4. A. There exists a clandestine Genocide Brigade -- those persons
that purposely destroy any alien life, in accordance with a
secret international meeting.
B. DT belongs to this organization, by his own admission.
5. DT's organization operates outside the law, and has taken part
in at least a half-dozen different cover-ups. This suggests an
almost illuminati-style approach.
6. DT is _very_ high up in his Organization -- he admitted as such.
I believe that he is probably one of four top officials.
He is probably an Assistant to the head of the Organization.
It is highly unlikely that he is actually in charge.
7. DT is hoping to use Mulder as a catalyst for ending the
Genocide. He feeds Mulder information in an attempt to have him
discover the Truth, and has been following Mulder's career
almost since the beginning.
8. DT's primary motivation in feeding Mulder information is his own
guilt. DT has admitted disliking the Genocide agreement, but
understands the neccesity of it.

Background

_The X-Files_ is a FOX show created by Chris Carter dealing with
2 FBI agents who work with the "X-Files," cases which could not be explained
easily and often involve the paranormal. The show premiered on
September 10, 1993 and is normally shown Fridays at 9 PM (Eastern).
The order of episodes for the first season has been increased to 24
shows, and a second season of 25 has unofficially been set.

Dr. Dana Scully plays the skeptic, insisting that everything has a

dig into the X-Files and also gave some higher officials in the bureau cause
to believe him eccentric, reinforcing the nickname "Spooky" which he
received in the academy. His fascination with extraterrestial life began in
his childhood when his sister disappeared - Fox claims she was abducted by
aliens.

Head of the Violent Crimes division of the FBI. He has appeared
on occasion whenever his cases cross over into Mulder's domain.
Section Chief Joseph McGrath (Frederick Coffin)
Head of the Office of Professional Responsibility and the one who
assigned Scully to the X-Files division to keep an eye on Mulder. He
doesn't particular care for Mulder and wishes to be rid of him and the
X-Files division.
"Deep Throat" (Jerry Hardin)
This mysterious and influential man first appeared to warn Mulder
about Ellens Air Force Base. He has provided Mulder with a lot of
classified information, and in doing so, places his own life in danger. His
reasons for helping Mulder are his own, but he claims that it is a form of
penitence.
(Note: The name "Deep Throat" has not been mentioned in the show, but it is
the name given to him by the show's writers.)

A gruesome murder without motive, clear M.O., or point of entry
bears resemblance to an X-File killer. However, the X-File cases took
place in 1933 and 1963. Mulder and Scully attempt to track down and
stop this century old killer.

A woman who claims to have seen a UFO as a child has her teenage
daughter disappear while on a camping trip. The signs seem to indicate
alien involvement. But the key to solving the mystery may be the
woman's young son instead of the missing daughter.

The discovery of a cannibalized human body in New Jersey State Park
sends Mulder and Scully to Atlantic City. Despite obvious police
cover-ups, Mulder continues his investigation of what may be a missing
link in human evolution. Meanwhile, Scully attends her god-son's
birthday party, which leads to some reflection on her future social
plans.
1.6 "Shadows" 10/22/93

When two very odd corpses appear in Philadelphia, Mulder and Scully
are requested to take a look at them. The investigation leads to a
secretary whose employer recently committed suicide and a strange force
which seems to protect her.
1.7 "Ghost in the Machine" 10/29/93
w: Alex Wong & Howard Gordon d: Jerrold Freeman
When a computer company's CEO is electrocuted, Mulder's old partner
asks for help with the case. With the advice of Deep Throat, Mulder
and Scully must stop the murderer, all the while fighting off the
defense department and the building itself.

When the Arctic Ice Core project's final transmission is a crazed
scientist saying "We are not who we are," Mulder and Scully become part
of an investigative team sent to the Alaskan site. Upon arrival, they
discover that the unearthing of an unearthly parasite could spell
trouble for them as well.

When a space shuttle launch is aborted and evidence of some bizarre
sabotage is found, a NASA worker asks Mulder and Scully to take a look
around. Meanwhile, the former astronaut who is in charge of the
mission is apparently haunted by something he encountered during a
spacewalk on a previous mission.
1.10 "Fallen Angel" 11/19/93
w: Howard Gordon & Alex Ganza d: Larry Shaw
Mulder is tipped off by Deep Throat about a government cover-up of a
UFO crash site. He is not the only one interested, as he discovers a
fellow UFO enthusiast whose appearance seems rather coincidental. And
so, the military tries to keep Mulder away while trying to bring a
certain other being in. But when he is discovered, Mulder's position
in the FBI is jeopardized.
1.11 "Eve" 12/10/93
w: Kenneth Beller & Chris Brancato d: Fred Gerber
Mulder and Scully check out the curious murder of a man in
Connecticut. When they discover that another man in California was
killed simultaneously in the same manner, the uncanny resemblance of
the two men's daughters seems more than coincidental. So, when the
first child disappears, the two decide to keep an eye on the remaining
child. What they find isn't alien, but rather something much more
familiar.
1.12 "Fire" 12/17/93

An old flame of Mulder's tries to enlist his aid to protect a
visiting Parliament member and lights a small spark of jealousy in
Scully. Mulder must overcome his fear of fire to take on the hot-
headed pyrokinetic serial killer.

w: Glen Morgan & James Wong d: David Nutter
After Scully's father passes away, Scully's skepticism is shaken by
a prisoner on death row who claims he can help catch a serial killer
using his psychic ability to speak with the dead.
1.14 "GenderBender" 1/21/94
w: Larry Barber & Paul Barber d: Rob Bowman
A series of sexually related killings confound the two agents who
aren't certain if the murderer is male or female. The clues lead them
to a small Amish-like community called the Kindred in Massachusetts who
are more puzzling than the serial killer.

During a trap set for a bank robber, a fellow agent and friend of
Scully's is shot by the criminal, whom Scully shoots in turn. While
the agent is brought back from apparent death, he takes on the persona
of the dead criminal whom he has chased for nearly a year. Scully
sticks with him during his "trauma," but Mulder believes that he is not
who he is.
1.16 "Young at Heart" 2/11/94
w: Scott Kaufer & Chris Carter d: Michael Lange
A criminal captured by a younger, fresh-from-the-academy Fox Mulder
seems to be making good on his promise of vengeance against the agent.
Now an older, wiser Mulder must attempt to find this elusive stalker who
may not be wiser...or older.

After a downed UFO crashes near Iraqi airspace, an unmarked truck

With apologies if X-Files is momentarily outwith the purpose of this
list, the following extract from an article concerning the series may
be of interest.

Ever wonder how - or even if - the FBI handles cases that involve the
paranormal or alien abductions?
Producer Chris Carter did, and the result is The X-Files.
The existence of such files may not be all that far-fetched, says Carter,
who created the series, serves as executive producer, and wrote five of the
first twelve episodes.
"I've talked to people who've been in government institutions and seen
drawers full of files about these subjects, the paranormal."
"I have this coy answer when people say, "Are there X files?" I say, "I
don't know that there are, but I don't know that there aren't". I'm a
natural born sceptic."

The series is purely fictional but is based around what Carter calls "The
realm of extreme possibility." For example, the first episode features
covert U.S. Air Force craft, located at Nellis Air Force Base, which have
been designed utilising recovered UFO technology.
The series can be exceptional at times and covers a wide range of subjects.

I believe Spielberg's film should be released during 1996, to coincide with
the 50th anniversary of the crash.
Any further information on Keith Preston's posting would be welcomed,
however, I suspect this is also without foundation.
If elements of respective governments do have unequivocal proof of ET life,
surely they would now deem it irresponsible and politically unacceptable to
release this information.
It could have a catastrophic effect on society. There would certainly be
major social, political and religious upheavals.
And how would we then perceive the abductions phenomenon?
It's ironic, and sad, to think that we strive to understand the reality of
ET life and yet, given the current state of the world, it may be in the best
interests of the human race if we never find out.

This XF article from Commonweal is so doggone good I wanted you all to
see it. The first half of the article is mainly a populist-based
vindication of the Fox Network. Funny stuff (he refers to BH90210 as
"Gidget Gets an Abortion"), and it really sets up the idea that XF
could only come from a network that's locked onto the imaginative
"kinkiness" of the mass audience. But I ain't staying up all night
typing this bad boy, so if you wanna read that first part, you gotta
get the magazine at your local bookshop or library (I found a copy at
a community college library).

"Go Ahead, Take a Peek"

TV, let's face facts, has never done horror very well. Science fiction,
sure; the grotesque, as in "Twilight Zone," of course; and the
gnarly/violent, *oi vey!* But not horror. And here's why. Because TV
wants to *show* you things, and real horror, as Poe knew and Clive Barker
knows, is not what you see but *what you're afraid you might have to see
in a minute*. It's when -- remember when you were six? -- you had to, but
didn't want to, peek over the edge of the blanket. And that moment before
you did peek: that's the moment of horror.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE. That legend appears at the beginning of every
"X-Files," and its promise-threat is just the stuff of the blanket-moment.
Here's the setup. F.B.I. Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) -- yes,
dammit, the first name is a dumb pun -- is obsessed with the fact that
his sister, when they were both children, was abducted by a UFO. To the
dismay of his superiors in the Bureau, he spends most of his time running
down cases of the extraterrestrial, the paranormal, or the unnatural that
the Bureau itself has junked under the presumably lunatic category of the
"X" Files. He has been assigned an assistant, Agent Dana Sculley [sic]
(Gillian Anderson), a good hard-headed skeptic, whose job is as much to
ride herd on Mulder's perceived dottiness as actually help him. UFOs,
demonic possession, gender-switching alien invaders -- each week Mulder
attempts to track down another eruption of the uncanny, and each week,
naturally, the sensible Sculley insists to him that there is a perfectly
reasonable explanation for the events he thinks so ominous -- until, again
naturally, the last ten minutes, when the uncanny is shown to be *there*.
Formulaic? Right: like about 90 percent of all the stories we've ever
bothered to enjoy. At one level, "X-Files" has all the subtlety of those
headlines in the tabloids ("Aliens Clone Hitler's Child!") that you wish
-- confess, now -- you could peruse in full, if only the guy ahead of you
had fourteen more frozen dinners to check out.
At another level, though, it draws upon what Harold Bloom used to call our
debased, but still authentic, yearning for the sublime; our sense that
even absurdities like sentient octopi from Planet Zord or three-headed,
telepathic calves are somehow, though false, more real than the mundane,
infinitely recurative commonplaces of "The World According to Benjamin
Franklin." For these things are of what the Middle Ages called,
beautifully, *faerie*; not "fairyland" in the cuddly Disneyesque sense,
but the truly and fearfully *strange*, out of which gods and demons -- and
humanity -- are born.
For its first season, at least, "X-Files" proved last year to be one of
the very closest approaches TV has made to the shiver of confronting
*faerie*. The dialogue was crisp and wryly literate; the pacing was
brilliant; and the camera work, virtually without distracting special
effects, was as good as -- and derivative from -- the best work of
Spielberg (Close Encounters) or John Carpenter (Halloween). But the
stunning goodness of the show was in the original concept of executive
producer Chris Carter.
The ghost-hunter in "X-Files" is not the occult Dr. Van Helsing-type of
the Dracula myth, but the squeaky-clean Agent Mulder of the
computer-dominated F.B.I. It's impossible, for me at least, not to read
Mulder's position as a parable about Religious Man in the Age of Perfect
Information. For all the transformation of the world into pure data,
Mulder still feels the terror and allure of the world as Mystery, a
visionary trapped in the infonet. And Sculley, the careerist/rationalist,
finds herself increasingly drawn into Mulder's universe. By season's end,
Sculley had joined Mulder in his sense that "The Truth Is Out There" -- at
the risk of both their careers in the Bureau.
The second season, which begins later this month, will be fascinating to
watch, just to see if the show can maintain its very wise balance between
the mundane and the uncanny. I hope it will, because this is some of the
very best storytelling on the Tube these days.
Would I lie to you? Come on, some of you have even learned to like "NYPD
Blue." This fall, watch "The X-Files."

What did everybody think ofthe season premiere?!?!?
I quite enjoyed it--watching it, of course, in total darkness and all
by myself (the better to scare you with my dear) Mulder looked like
he was living totally on the edge--the nightmare of his sister's
abduction was very eerie. (did anyone else think that the young actor
portraying Mulder as a boy *really* looked like the grown Mulder?!)
After the formfeed, (possible spoiler if you missed the show....)
What do you think happened to Mulder when the contact occurred in
Puerto Rico? NOthing? Something?
I am looking forward to Firday's epidsode about a human-sized parasite
killing people in the serers!

of course the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico has not been
closed down and NASA's cancelled SETI (HRMS) program has been

| I thought the premiere was OK, but not one of their best (but then,
I've always tended to prefer the terrestrial monsters to the "close
encounters" - personal taste, I suppose). Speaking of which, last
Friday's episode (the mutated flatworm) tickled me no end, and not just
because it initiated the re-activation of the X-Files (and Mulder and
Scully as a team). While it certainly could have been more gruesome if
it had wanted to, I think it did pretty well for a TV program; and I
was heartily glad I'd already finished my dinner before I watched the
thing. ;-)
[Side note: I've just finished reading a book about the real-life
outbreaks of a family of viruses <the Ebola clan of filoviruses>, the
effects of which on humans are so much worse than anything I've seen in
TV or movies that it truly boggles the mind. Fortunately the outbreaks
have been contained so far - or have simply burned themselves out -
without massive loss of life, possibly because the viruses in question
seem to be mutating very rapidly while in search of new hosts, and may
be rendering _themselves_ less dramatically fatal (since killing off
one's host before one has time to reproduce is not a good survival
technique). However, they're still around, their source still isn't
known, there's still no cure, and if any of them should surface in
densely-populated areas, they'd make the Black Death look like a "mild
outbreak".
Anyway, to dart back to the subject for a moment, whenever I get to
feeling that the X-Files stories are a little far-fetched, all I have
to do is check a few reference works to be reassured that there's a
wealth of unbelievably-scary source material...]

The X-Files have been showing on BBC 2 here in the UK. They original
started in a 9pm Monday evening slot and have now moved to 9pm
Thursday evenings. The last episode shown was 'Ice'.

I thought it was cool that she and their boss forced Fox's "secret
contact" out into the open, though I'm puzzled that he even showed
up since he knew that Fox was headed after the alien.

Synopsis post-<FF>
The episode opens with a mutiny aboard the U.S.S. Argent in the North
Atlantic, although it's a little backwards from the typical mutiny.
Instead of throwing the captain off the ship, the crew is abandoning
it, and the captain is staying.
Cut to a Canadian fishing trawler. They come on the boat full of
crewmen from the Argent. They're all very, very old.
Mulder and Scully get wind of this in the usual fashion. There's
heavy-duty security surrounding the survivors, who have been moved to
Bethesda Naval Hospital, but Mulder weasels a clearance for Scully so
she can attempt to figure out what's going on. Before she can get past
her disbelief at the age of the survivor, she gets the boot.
Mulder has observed that the Argent's last known position was in an
area of the North Atlantic which has almost as good a reputation for
disappearances and weirdness as the Bermuda Triangle. He raises the
theory that it might be some sort of weird space-time continuum thing.
Brings in the Phildelphia Experiment (citing the popularly reckoned,
rather than official description of the event) and thinks maybe the
military never gave up trying to hide ships from radar. Maybe they're
using alien technology captured at the Roswell UFO crash. Scully thinks
Mulder's been reading too many goofy magazines again. Nevertheless,
something is definitely up on the Argent and they're gonna go take a
look.
Scully and Mulder go to Norway and find a lot of Norweigian small ship
captains won't go near the place they want to go for love or money,
citing folk tales that the place is evil. An American expatriate,
played by John Savage, offers to take them. They go out on his ship,
and pretty much collide with the Argent which appears out of nowhere
(there's some sort of weirdness going on with the radar).
They board the Argent and begin to take in the scenery. While they're
in the interior, they hear the engines of the ship they came in start
up. The vessel they used to get here is being pirated, by party or
parties unknown. The American captain is less than pleased about this.
Not long after, the first mate, a Norwegian boy, is murdered. And then
they discover Captain Barclay of the Argent, drunk out of his mind, and
very, very old. The John Sargent character accuses him of murdering
the mate, but Scully points out that the mate had his skull caved in
with a powerful blow and that Barclay doesn't have the strength and
motor coordination left to keep a glass to whiskey to his lips.
And not long after, the Captain is dead.
Everyone goes to sleep for a while. And when they wake up, they're
starting to age, too. Mulder reiterates his space-time continuum
theory, citing the radar behavior. It meets with even less enthusiasm
than it did the first time, but something is definitely happening,
because they're getting old.
Alonog about this time they discover the murderer of the mate. This is
a man named Olafson, who the American expatriate recognizes as a local
ne'er-do-well. What's more interesting is he's not getting old, and he
appears to know why, but he's not talking. He's tied up. Mulder
notices that there's one yellow pipe that appears to have escaped the
decrepitude evident elsewhere in the ship. While Mulder and Scully
follow the pipe, the American and Olafson have a few words. Olafson
will spill the beans if he's let go.
Mulder and Scully follow the pipe to the sewage tank on the ship, where
they discover a platoon of rats living pretty well. The water used in
sewage processing is seperate from the system useed to provide drinking
water and so forth. The regular drinking water is contaminated with
something, probably an effect of the strange electromagnetics
hereabouts, and that has caused the natural aging process to
accelerate. The stuff in the sewer system is okay. But there's not
much of it left.
The American has gotten the secret from Olafson and sent him to his
reward. Of course, Mulder and Scully have figured it out, too. They
are skeptical that Olafson escaped, as the American claims, but it's
not really interesting. If they drink the water from the sewer system,
they ought to stop the aging.
This works on Scully and the American, but Mulder isn't responding.
The supply is limited, and the American thinks they ought to save it
and let Mulder rot. Unsurprisingly, Scully is averse to this idea.
Eventually, the American descides to barricade himself in the
compartment with the sewage processor, backflush all the usable water
into the storage tank, and let Scully and Mulder swing.
About this time, the Argent begins to lose hull integrity. One of the
places it loses it is where the American has holed up. The compartment
floods, he can't get out, that's the end of him.
So, Mulder gets worse fast, Scully somewhat more slowly, which is about
where you came in.

| .-1 missed a couple of keys points of explanation -
elaborations on the spoiler.....
The first thing S&M notice on boarding the Argent is the commissioning
plaque, which indicates that the ship was launched in 1991, but the condition
of the ship - corrosion and decrepitude - makes it look like it's been
floating loose for 40 years or more.
Mulder inserts the requisite UFO/Phildelphia X-file stuff, and the corruption
of the time space continuum, but Scully points out that their hair hasn't
turned gray or fallen out, just that they are looking old, so SHE invokes
the "free radicals" theory of aging - that something in the water or air
or magnetic fields is increasing the free radical content of the environment,
causing aging and general non-organic corrosion.
Mulder is more poorly affected because he got seasick on the ride out and was
dehydrated from vomiting. Presumably he would have drunk more ship's water
after arriving to rehydrate himself, aggravating the ill effects.
THEN Mulder notices the pipe and draws the connection to the sewage system,
with some disclaimer about how most of the ship's water would come from
desalination, drawing from outside water, but the sewage system wouldn't(???).
Then the rest of .-1 is right.
Scully's diary leads the doctors to be able to cure her and Mulder
by "rebalancing their electrolytes."
Would that the effects of aging by free radicals could so easily be reversed!

The US Navy arrives, rescues S&M just before they wink out altogether,
takes them back to hospital, where their electrolytes are rebalanced
and they are restored to pristine youth.
The ship sank within an hour of their rescue (because of accelerated
corrosion), so there's no going back to see why.

Gillian Anderson had a baby sometime around the start of shooting for this
season. She was sorta written out of the first few episodes so she could
recover. She comes back later in the season to full participation.

| So what did folks think about the season finale?
The "secrets" show was interesting as a recap, and I thought the actual
finale/cliffhanger was quite good; tied together a lot of the previous
episodes and threads. My main 'nit' was that it appeared that "they"
must have started the bit with the water before the files were stolen,
since the neighbor killed her husband when Fox was first contacted...
Also, it was a pretty amazing coincidence that the earthquake occurred
when it did, revealing the boxcar, and that the Navaho translator they
needed just happenned to live there as well...

No secrets at all in the "Secrets" show. Pretty much a zero for people
who have been fans for some time. I also thought the use of the
narrator with the Bermuda Triangle Documentary voice brought it down
lower than zero.

| I thought the Secrets show was pretty good. I have been watching
for a long time, but I still found it interesting. Apparantly,
I missed more episodes than I though, especially the older ones.
I liked the way they showed the whole thing unfold until the present
day.
Great cliffhanger!! How do you suppose Mulder is going to get out
that train car? Scully was obviously reading something pretty scarey
too! A friend of mine thinks they made her pregnant. I didn't catch
that....does anyone here think that??? She was referring to when
she was kidnapped and they were doing all those experiments on her. I
saw Scully's stomach but I just figured it was the result of one of
the tests...I never thought they actually made her pregnant. That
would certainly be an interesting twist.

| I started watching 'X' when it first premiered. I was intrigued by many
episodes; sometimes some of the stories seemed so clich�d, I would get that good
ol' cynicism about the show falling into crass commercialism. Then they'd
deliver a smasher.
Other times, I felt they were going a bit overboard on the gov't paranoia angle
[but these days how can you tell?] then they'd do a modulation and it would be
cool.
I _knew_ I missed some good ones when I saw 'Secrets' (i.e. Mulder's boss
relating his out-of-body experience). Finale was worthy. In all, they do it
Right.

| Actually tonight is part 2 of 3, according to the Sunday Globe
tv mag. Part 1 was the season end, title Anasazi, Tonight
the new season premiere is titled "The Blessing Way" which is
a Navajo ritual (of cleansing and restoring one to nature I
believe, but I'm not an expert). I read somewhere that Muldar is
believed dead (though we know better don't we ;-) so, as there is to
be another episode following, we might not find out all tonight.
But I'll be watching...

I hope so, although I think this might be a 3-parter. Some pretty
wild imaginations thought this up. We've got Fox, wanted by everybody
for lots of different reasons, and possibly blown to smithereens in
the buried boxcar. And Dana's in a world of hurt too.... she must have
been suspended by now for missing the hearing and lying about Mulder.
I'm wondering if they'll be able to expose the alien cover-up or if
they'll come up short of evidence again. I'm sure someone has erased
the computer files by now.
If they don't get Cancerman out of their way they're always going to
be in mortal danger. Has there ever been any clues as to who is
helping them in the FBI? If its someone as powerful as the director,
that could explain how they get out of this mess.
This show has me riveted to the tube every Friday night. The only
other show I watch faithfully every week is B5. Everything else
(no matter how well done) is a rehash of the last 3 decades.

| I thought the entire 3-part episode was exceptional. Several times
the story made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
It left some interesting, unanswered questions:
Spoiler:
- Was it a bluff telling cigarette-man that the Navaho talker had
memorized the tape and taught it to 10 other tribe members?
- Is it an international conspiracy involving the CIA? (who are those
guys cigarette-man was hanging around with?)
- Mulder saw the ship at the mine where all the records were stored.
This means the aliens are still with us; but why and what were they
doing there? When they ran by Scully in the tunnel, I wonder if they
recognized her as one of the humans they once examined.
- If Mulder made a return trip to the mine, would he find the tunnels
of file cabinets gone?
I can't wait to see what happens next with this.
The one thing that the viewer has to disregard is that its not likely
one person with a computer tape showing evidence of an alien
coverup is going to be taken seriously by anyone. At least once a
year the Inquirer publishes a picture of the president walking on the
White House lawn with an alien. Except for a few gullible people,
no one believes that.

I believe the Navajo rattled off something from the tape that
only Cancer-man would have recognized, so he at least memorized
some of the tape. Enough to scare him, anyways.

I thought of that, but the presence of the ship leads me to believe
they are aliens. Of course, XFILES could double-cross me and
make the whole thing more complicated. How about if these
creatures are genetic mutants created by the aliens (who we haven't
seen yet) to do their dirtywork? Which is, of course, collecting
human genetic material which they are using to create a race of
super aliens!
So its THEM experimenting on US and not the other way around!!
It'll become quite clear to us when we see our first alien with
strawberry blond hair, freckles, and green eyes!

I thought last week's was one of the best ever. Gillian Anderson
really, really shined, and the script was terrific. Someone on the
writing has realized that they can only milk Mulder's particular
obsession for so much before the show gets old, and they've very wisely
chosen to introduce another thread where they can exploit many of the
same factors that make the show interesting, yet have Scully and Mulder
switch sides of the coin. And they aren't just simple foils, either.
Their motivations are unique -- it's clear that when Mulder chooses to
be skeptical, he does it for reasons that are his own, not just a
re-hash of Scully's.
Now we're really starting to wonder what Peter Boyle's character meant
when he told Scully she never dies....

| I concur. The episodes/seasons just get better and better. I like the
way they switch off the character's focus so it's not always Mulder
going out on a limb, so to speak. The characters feel as if they've
matured.
Interesting thing I read in this past Sunday's paper: David Duchovny
found himself in a position to ask some FBI agents about the show and
they said they liked his character's demeanor,etc. but no way would
they send two agents into a dark building alone, with only flashlights!
They also gave him a tip: never pull your id with your gun hand.

| I finally got to sit down and watch last friday's show and I have to
say, they're really giving Mulder and Scully's part a boost!! I really
agree with note .75 on Scully's shinning role, it's about time. One part
that I found hard to deal with is Mulder saying that what was going on
was only testing his patience and not his beliefs. This is coming from
a man who has been trying to convince his partner for the past couple
of seasons that space men really do exist but fails to understand her
beliefs. I especially liked when she laid into him about believing
every time he see's a light in the sky and not her...

Peter Boyle played a psychic in one of the episodes either at
the end of last season or the beginning of this one. He had
some visions that assisted them in finding a serial killer.
And Mulder's beliefs are quite different than Scully's, and
therefore Mulder has a hard time accepting Scully's beliefs.
If you think of it, Scully is a scientist, basically, and she
should have no trouble believing that life exists elsewhere
in the universe. But some of Scully's beliefs are religious
in nature, and Mulder is not religious ... so he has a hard
time accepting this since it's virtually unproveable, espec-
ially using science, which virtually DISPROVES religion.

| Last week was an interesting show. Mulder alone in Mass talking
to Scully over the cell phone throughout the show and every call
was a "who died now" deal. Loved the conversations about girlie
scream, hating bugs, what are you wearing, etc... Plus Scully's
expression when she heard the name Bambi and when she finally
met her.. Plus the "look pooped" comment from the town cop.. It
was a classic!! They must have had fun doing this show...

While that was a "different" (almost a dream-like quality) episode, I have

| The government was conducting an experiment with a house full of
cockroaches, why, I don't remember. I do know that they weren't
responsible for any of the death directly, but they did scare the
people TO death. How they got all over town, I don't have the
answer to that and the fact that their exo-skeleton was entirely
made of metal has me confused as to how they became that way. It
might have something to do with the warehouse full of manuer...
Any ideas...?

| Plus, didn't the alien probe roaches use methane gas for fuel?,
or something like that? I remember the robotic engineer saying that
his biggest problem in sending robots out into space was that he
couldn't figure out how to keep them fueled. The aliens solved
that by creating self-refueling roaches.
My favorite line in this story: Mulder: "I never thought I'd say
this to you Scully. You smell bad."

| I saw this weeks episode and I have to say, it wasn't one of their
best..
Starts with two janitors working in lobby when all of a sudden,
the floor begins to shake, then the windows explode, then it's all
quiet again. The camera then moves to a bunch of construction
workers and they see their construction signs being knocked down
by an unknown force and one of the workers was killed. Then you
see a man driving a tractor trailer down a road, he then slamms
on the brakes when he see's the Elephant running down the road
towards him. He almost hits it, but stops just in time and the
Elephant walks up to his door, looks in, and then continues running
down the road where it drops dead of exhaustion after running 46
miles from the zoo where it came from.
This is where Mulder and Scully come into the picture. Their
investigating the dead worker trying to find out how he was
crushed to death, the windows exploding and the car having one
whole side smashed in and no one saw a thing. They investigate a
group of animal activist who they feel may have something to do
with the Elephants escape. While Mulder is doing his thing, Scully
follows one of activist to the zoo where the activist is killed by
a tiger that disappears in a white light, and is now invisible. As
this is happening, the camera is on and taping his death and Scully
is off with the head of the zoo who caught her sneaking around
following the activist. Mulder saw the tape and said that the tiger
didn't kill the man, a fanthom did it. This did not go over well
with Scully who says he was mauled by the tiger and that it
couldn't have been anything else.
Scully goes back to the headquarters of the activists and tells
the leader that if he had any part in this, that he will be
spending the rest of his life behind bars. Mudler talks to a woman
that works with a gorrilla that can speak thru sign language and
trys to tell her that the animals that are disappearing, are being
impregnanted by alians and are being returned. She doesn't
believe him for a second untill she and Scully perform an autopsy
on the Elephant and find out that she was pregnant. The tiger shows
up at a construction site and has two workers trapped. Mulder,
Scully and the two people from the zoo go to capture it, but it
ends up being killed while trying to attack the woman. After Scully
does another autopsy, she finds out that the tiger was pregnant
too.
Police come into the scene and give the woman a warrent to take
the gorrilla away from her to return it back to the jungle where it
came from. The manager takes the gorrilla and hides it in a
warehouse to help out the woman since the activist wouldn't.
The activist shows up at the warehouse where he is killed,
(shouldn't have been there), by the manager. The woman confesses
to Scully and tells her where the gorrilla is being kept and by
who. Mulder goes to the warehouse and confronts the manager about
the gorrilla and tells him to calm her down before she hurts
herself because she was trashing about in the cage. Mulder gets
locked in the cage with the gorrilla and gets roughed up abit
before she signs him a message and disappears in the while light.
Scully finds Mulder passed out in the cage and tells him the
manager has been caught and what happened. Mulder, while bleding
from a minor head wound, rushes out to the car to ask the woman
what the sign meant that the gorrilla was trying to tell him,
and she said that it didn't make any since, "Man save Man". In the
end, they find the gorrilla dead side the road after she was hit by
car, and she was pregnant. End of story!!

| Man, this was awesome! I wish I had taped the two-parter. I should
have known it would be worth watching 3 or 4 times.
Spoiler below. If you haven't seen it and intend to borrow or wait
for the repeat, don't read the short bit below.
The story sped by so quickly that I'd have to see it again and
organize my thoughts with the help of someone else, but in a nutshell:
Krychek, as host to the alien, was lured out of hiding by cigarette
smoking man, whose promise to the alien was "I have what you want".
And what the government had that the alien wanted was ..... you
guessed it; his spacecraft. It's in top-secret storage in an
abandonned missile-silo complex in North Dakota (feel free to correct
me if I get some details wrong).
Ironically, Mulder and Scully get there, and here's Mulder only feet
from the truth when he's whisked away by government troops.
The alien leaves Krychek, which means he's now stranded in a sealed
room with nothing but the spacecraft and absolutely no hope of
discovery.
There were other high points in the story, including the capture of
the guy who murdered Scully's sister and Mulder's father. But as you
might expect, he died mysteriously in his cell.
Yes, this was definitely a WHAM episode.

| I thought the intro to the second part was really cool, too...
the sailor talking to the young cancer man and Fox's father.
There was definitely a lot in this episode, and even more if you
have been following the series... like does everyone realize why,
when Fox told the guy from the 'secret group' that Krychek had
the tape, he reacted the way he did? (ans: in a previous episode,
cancer man had lied when he told the group he had destroyed it)
One thing that puzzles me is that at this point it seems we have
at least three differant alien species involved in the series...
