1135.0. "Hugo Award list ??" by DECWET::LOWE () Tue Mar 23 1993 21:15

Has there ever been a comprehensive list/history of the Hugo Awards from year 1
thru whenever ? I would like to see this, hopefully something that included all
of the nominations.

The Nebula Award compilations used to contain a list of the finalists
for both the Hugo Awards and the Nebulas. I don't know if these
compilations are still being assembled, or if they still list the
    nominees.

    You could always contact Jerry Boyajian, I'm sure he'd know. %^}

1135.2Listed in an AppendixWMOIS::BEAUREGARD_DThu Mar 25 1993 12:237
"The New Hugo Winners Volume II" presented by Isaac Asimov has an appendix
which lists the categories & winners of Hugo Awards from 1953 - 1991.

The book itself contains 9 winners in the three categories of Novella,
Novelette, and Short Story for the years 1986 - 1988.

Getting a list of all the nominees -- in one place -- is a bit of
a challenge. Bruce Pelz might have one. George Flynn might have
one. Tony Lewis might have one.

    Why don't you send a S.A.S.E. to

    	M.C.F.I.
    	P.O. Box 1010
    	Framingham, MA 01701

and ask them where such a list might be gotten. (This gets you in
direct touch with George and Tony, and indirect touch with Bruce.)

The Science Fiction Achievement Award(tm), also known as the Hugo
Award(R), is given annually by the World Science Fiction Society(R)
(WSFS(R)). The distinguishing characteristics of the Hugo Award are that
it is sponsored by WSFS, administered by the committee of the World Science
Fiction Convention(R) (Worldcon(R)) held that year, and determined by
nominations from and a popular vote of the membership of WSFS. In general,
a Hugo award given in a particular year is for work that appeared in the
previous calendar year.

The listing below includes the Hugos and three other types of awards:
the Campbell Award, Special Awards, and the Gandalf Award.

The John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the Best New Writer is
administered by the Worldcon Committee and determined by the same
nomination and voting mechanism as the Hugo but was originally sponsored by
Conde Nast Publications. In 1979 sponsorship of the Campbell award was
assumed by Davis Publications who currently sponsor it.

Special Awards are determined directly by the Worldcon Committee without
any popular nominations or vote.

The Gandalf Award was an award which, like the Campbell Award, was
administered by the Worldcon Committee and determined by the Hugo
nomination and voting mechanism. It was sponsored by Lin Carter and
S.A.G.A.

Present WSFS rules allow the Hugo nomination and voting mechanisms to be
used only for the Hugo Award and the Campbell Award.

At the start of the Hugo Awards ceremony in Orlando, there was a
worldcon retrospective, done with slides. Each Hugo-winning novel
    got its own slide.

When Lois McMasters Bujold came up to receive her Hugo for _Barrayar_,
she said, "Now I know why I love you people. You were applauding
    the *books*!"

    Da%n straight.

two things come to mind:

as many times as i've seen it rapped in this notesfile, i've still got to say
that most of my exposure to past hugo winners has been from books purchased from
science fiction book club. i've never lived in a city whose library had a large
sf collection and i've never been able to afford publisher's editions at the
bookstores, so with out sfbc, i probably wouldn't have enjoyed a small fraction
of of these excellent works.

i couldn't help noticing the few number of hugos achieved by asimov, in fact i
only remember one for a novelette. what gives?

For a long time, Isaac was only writing non-fiction (1958 to mumble).

He holds a Hugo for Best Novel (_The_Gods_Themselves_), Best Novelette
("The Bicentennial Man") and Best Short Story ("Gold"), as well as
an honorary Hugo for Best All-time Series (The Foundation Trilogy).

    What more could you want?

In addition, a large majority of Asimov's fiction writing occurred
before they awarded Hugos on a regular basis (the first Hugo for
    shorter-than-novel-length fiction was 1954, I believe).

And for those in the Colorado Springs area, Poor Richard's seems to have quite
a collection of old SFBC hardbacks. So if searching for old Hugo winners is on
your list of things to do take a look. liesl
