1085.0. "What happened to Heavy Metal?" by OLDTMR::FOX () Sun Jul 19 1992 15:10

What ever happened to the film "Heavy Metal", the animated feature
based on the magazine with the thundering soundtrack? I'm very
suprised it hasn't appeared in the video stores over the years,
especially with all the 'never to go video' films like Gone With
the Wind, Rocky Horror and ET finally coming out. I rememeber it
being somewhat of a cult classic when it was in the theaters 10
years ago, with many reciting all the lines and such. Is it doomed
for the 'animated film festival' circuits?

There was a problem shortly after the release of the movie. One company
had the distribution rights to the movie and one company had tape and
record rights to the movie and one company had the ownership of the movie.
But the record and tape rights where bought from the company with
    distribution rights to the movie.
Along comes the video boom all three companies wanted to release the
film on video tape. They went to court to find out who could distribute
the video taoe ans to see if the company with rercord and tape rights
had any rights at all. Well a year and a half ago the court battle
still going the distribution and record contracts have expired and the
owners now have full rights to a movie hardly anyone wants any more.
The audience for this movie is so small now the only money coming from
the movie is a meager rental fee from Cinimax to show the movie on
cable a few times over a couple year period.
So greed killed every one's chance to enjoy the movie and the ability
of anyone to get any revenue from it.
                              Sad Story
