1066.0. "A New Outer Limits??" by OLDTMR::FOX () Tue May 12 1992 10:51

Has anything ever came of the "Outer Limits" return to
to TV project, mentioned a few years back? If I recall,
the rumor stated that the Canadian film company that
took over "The New Twilight Zone" from CBS and produced
a couple of years of episodes for syndication.

Such a classic series that was well done. It's the only
one that hasn't made it to the remake/return genre...I'd
like to see it made into a movie, similar to the Spielberg
"Twilight Zone" flick...

and it blew. (IMHO of course). The premiere was 8:00 p.m. EST, Sunday 3/26.
Three generations of "Bridges" (Lloyd, Beau and Jason(?) -- a boy -- probably
Beau's son) paid homage to the 'mad scientist' theme, where earth organisms were
incubated in Martian soil and developed into scorpion-like scuttlers, with great
IQ potential.

At first I thought "maybe I'm jaded with the insect swarm out of control theme"
as that has been done quite often over the years. But then, the original series
managed to pull it off when there had been a fair number of them preceding even
then.

It wound up seeming quite melodramatic and clichd -- even with the political/
domestic sub-texts.

One aspect I did find somewhat amusing: in the early part of the show Beau,
having been recently fired from his top secret gov't job, walks into his barn
and finds a paned-glass window which he installs. Later in the program, after
he's recreated his experimental Martian insect colony and starts to exert
control over them, he rails that they will be denied food and will therefore
war among themselves until he sees fit to alleviate their suffering. Mark
Twains' 'Letters from the Earth' suggested. (?)

All in all not an auspicious beginning but I'll probably sample a few more just
to see if it's more hype than hip.

Was this from George R. R. Martin's story?
Was that story called "The Sand Kings?"

According to the ad in "TV Guide", it was "Sandkings", but the synopsis
didn't sound like they followed the story, ah, closely.

re:-1

Don't you hate it when that happens? (BTW George R.R. Martin is a consultant for
this show).

Sand Kings was a wonderful story -- sorry to hear they screwed it up.

Anyone know if Showtime has a fixed time-slot for the series,
and if so, what it is?
