This is probably a good one for Jerry ... I want to get my books insured in case of fire or theft. Since I have some older 1st editions, how do I go about establishing their current value? Is there a price guide that I can purchase (which would be nice to have anyway), and can someone suggest a knowledgable SF appraisor in the MA Worcester/Boston area? Thanks, Mike H.

It depends. Appraisers charged a good amount of cash for the service.
You have to have a good idea that the value of your collection is
going to be worth the trouble. I don't have any special insurance
on my collection, just an all-purpose homeowners insurance boosted
up to cover the collection. I just did a quick estimate based on a
figure of one dollar/book, and insured for that much.
Most collectors I know personally do this.
If you really want to go the appraisal route, I'd suggest trying to
call Avenue Victor Hugo on Newberry Street in Boston. I *think* they
have someone that will do appraisals or if not, can probably point
you toward one.
