898.0. "Asprin: Phule's Company" by COOKIE::WITHERS (Slipping into madness is good for the sake of comparison) Thu Aug 02 1990 19:20

Captain Jester (also known as Willard Phule, late of Phule Proof
Munitions) has acquired a position in the Space Legion, a military
branch of the galactic government, along with the Space Army and the
Space Navy. Captain Phule, after an auspcisous start to his career
with his first court-martial, has been given command of an Omega
Company. Omega Companies are where the bottom of the barrel sink to in
the legion and are generally made up of people branded as misfits,
    incompetants, or crooks.

Told from the perspective of Phule's butler, Beeker, Phule's Company
details the adventures of Phule and his men and women - a diverse crew
of various kinds of sentient beings.

898.1ReviewCOOKIE::WITHERSSlipping into madness is good for the sake of comparisonThu Aug 02 1990 19:2415
I enjoyed this book. The characters in the book develop over time, as
does their relationship. A sarcastic look at military life where you
can buy commisions (and just about anything else), the book has a
number of surprises and funny spots.

I found that the book, to me, was not as slapstck funny as the Myth
series. I think that was what I was expecting when I read the cover
teasers. Instead, it comes across more as a Hogan's Heroes without
fences in space. There are a few pleasant surprises, and the
characters will develop as the series progresses.

A recommended read for people who like humorous Sci Fi.

I also have read and enjoyed the book. I would second the thought
that the characters develop... aside from "Phule takes over as
commanding officer, and gets to know the Company...", characters
such as Phule and Beeker (the butler) that are in the book all
along also become more real as the book progresses. Even the
aliens (ESPECIALLY the aliens?) become more "human" as we
    learn more about them....

The situation at the end of the book leaves an opening for
further "adventures of Phule's Company" to come. I hope this
    does, in fact, happen.

I really enjoyed it too, and we are anxiously awaiting more! Anyone
know of sequels? Not deathless prose, but very good light reading.

I am embarassed to say I liked this one too. On the pro side, it's
very funny, is paced well, and is, overall, a "happy" book - as
contrasted with almost any of Ray Bradbury's little nightmares
(which I love). On the Con side, .3 from Willie Smith sums it up:
Light. Only I would spell it: L-I-T-E.
