875.0. "Art books - colonization of space?" by FGVAXX::LAING (Soft-Core Cuddler*Jim Laing*282-1476) Tue May 29 1990 03:11

Many years ago, I saw several art books at a friend's house, that depicted
what life aboard a future space-station might be like, life on a lunar
base, views of huge colonies on planets and in space, etc., etc. They
were art books rather than books of fiction prose ... I'd like to find
any such books that might still be in print - ARTWORK depicting life in
space, on moons or planets, on large spacecraft, etc.

    Any pointers to such art/books?

    Thanks,

    Jim

If you want to go antique hunting, back in the '50s Willy Ley did a
series of books on the possibile exploration of space. Art work by
Chesley (sp?) Bonstell. Got a bit of the technology wrong, but the art
work was awesome. The only title I can remember is "By Spaceship to
    the Moon".

There's also an Arthur C. Clarke book with a title like "Prelude to
Space" with superb art work from around 196

In the greater New York area, I've seen books like the kind you're
talking about at a store called "Forbidden Planet" where they sell
sci-fi literature and paraphernalia. If you're interested you can send
me email and I'll return with addresses and phone#'s. If you're out of
town, I'll find out if they do mail order.

    re:.1

Willy Ley did a large number of books on space exploration, with
a variety of artist, but the three he did with Bonestell are the
    definite classics:

    THE CONQUEST OF SPACE (1949)
    THE EXPLORATION OF MARS (1956)
    BEYOND THE SOLAR SYSTEM (1964)

I've got the first two, as well as (I think, I'll have to check)
a couple of Ley's books with other artists.

Bonestell is certainly the premier astronomical artist. He worked
on at least a half-dozen books on space exploration with writers
other than Ley. He also did numerous astronomical covers for some
fo the sf magazines of the 50's and 60's. And, he did the background
matte paintings for two sf films: WAR OF THE WORLDS (during the
prologue sequence) and WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE. *And*, he painted an
astronomical mural that resides at the Smithsonian Air and Space
Museum (little-known fact: it was originally done for the Musuem
of Science in Boston in the early 50's, and moved to the A&SM in
    the 70's).

I found a few more books that answered my own query/search ...

Diary of a Spaceperson (Chris Foss)
    The Chris Foss Portfolio

BOth are (to my taste) quite good, albeit unusual ...
