854.0. "HEAVY METAL" by FASDER::CRUSSELL (Antic the Fearless) Tue Jan 23 1990 15:48

I just noticed that Heavy Metal is showing this month on
cable on Cinemax. Why has it taken this long to show up?
I remember seeing it back when I was in college, but I
haven't heard or seen anything since. I've looked for it
in video stores, but I can never find it. Some people
have told me that they found it in some video stores,
other people tell me that it was kept from video stores
by ongoing lawsuits between the producers and the rock
groups that performed. Does anyone have the real scoop
on why it's taken so long for such a good movie to show
    up on cable?

HEAVY METAL has been on cable quite a few times. I taped it off
of one pay-movie-channel back about six years ago. And it was
on Cinemax back last summer. I'm sure it's been on cable at other
    times.

It's never been released (legally) on videocassette for exactly
the reason you mentioned: rights issues over some of the soundtrack
numbers. The licenses for the songs did not cover video releases,
and some of the artists involved wanted to renegotiate for
    substantially larger sums of money.

If you have access to the right sources (no, don't ask me how to
get access to them), you can acquire copies of a Japanese videotape
release (in English, with Japanese subtitles) but this is not a
    legal release.

854.2Heavy Metal - the magazine.SWAPIT::LAMQ KtlFri Mar 09 1990 17:088
I'm not sure if this is the right place to discuss this but I'll
mention it and the moderators can move it to an appropriate topic or
    conference.

Does anyone still follow the comic magazine _Heavy_Metal_ at all? Its
one of the few comic strip collections that have serious SF stories in
it. I havent seen it in a long time and I'm wondering if its still
available? Does anybody have any opinions about this magazine?

HM went quarterly so long stories wouldn't have to be serialized.
As a side effect, it seems to have become harder to find on newstands/
    magazine racks.

I subscribe to HM. Have for 8 years. Great mag. Liked it better as a
monthly, instead of a quarterly. I will post thier address later in
case anyone wants to write them to subscribe.

there will be a double feature of "Heavy Metal" and "The Rocky Horror
Picture Show" at the Worcester Artist Group, in Worcester,
    Massachusetts, Friday night January 31st.

I believe the double feature will play once at 8 p.m. - recommended
donation, $5 I think. I have heard rumor the movies will play again at
    midnight...but I'm not certain.

For more thorough information, Please call 508-754-0545.

Very Rough directions as follows:

Take 290 to Lincoln Street (290 crosses Lincoln Street (rte 70) twice in
Worcester). If you're on Lincoln Street heading from Lincoln Plaza towards
Worcester Center, you will see a road come in to the right at a set of
lights *after* Hahnemann hospital and burncoat street. The road is "Harlow
Street". Take Harlow Street until it takes a 90 degree left turn. The
warehouse along the road just before that corner houses the Worcester
Artist Group on the second floor.
