757.0. "James Hogan: Mirror Maze" by DRUMS::FEHSKENS () Mon Mar 06 1989 16:06
I just finished the paperback edition of Jim Hogan's latest, "Mirror
Maze". It was a major disappointment. It was packaged as a "twofer",
shrink-wrapped with "The Proteus Operation", which must have bombed.
"Mirror Maze" is relatively light on science fiction and seems to
be more of a typical modern pulp spy/adventure thriller in the
Clive Cussler mode. It is dragged down by Hogan's incessant preaching
of the virtues of Libertarian (he calls it "Constitutionalist")
values. And similar to the theme behind the "Inherit the Stars"
trilogy, all the world's ills are the consequence of a vast plot
masterminded by a few greedy types. The plot relies too heavily
on coincidence and paranoia.
Has anybody else read it? Any other opinions?

| I agree. Clive Clussler can write better sf than Hogan can write
contemporary adventure fiction. He is entirely too heavy with the
politics in this one. I don't mind a writer expressing his personal
beliefs in his works but Hogan went too far in this one. It was
almost like reading an L Neil Smith book. I hope he gets back on
track with the next one.
