Last night, Charles Addams [better known as "Chas Addams"] died.
Many people knew of him only indirectly, through the television
show, _The Addams Family_; however, his cartoons festooned _The
New Yorker_ for generations.
My first book of cartoons was _Drawn and Quartered_, a collection
of vintage Addams. Since then, a number of others, including _Creature
Comforts_, has been published.
Addams' style was distinctive; his touch was unique. "Charles Addams
House" has entered the English language as meaning a weird, somewhat
run-down Victorian house.
He will be missed.
