664.0. ""Sphere"" by OPUS::BUSCH () Thu Aug 04 1988 14:17

Anyone care to start off a discussion of Michael Crichton's new novel "Sphere"?
My wife just bought me a copy but I haven't had the chance to start reading it
yet.

664.1Not so good, too bad!BLKFOR::WILKINSTrust me, I know what I'm doingThu Aug 04 1988 15:3623
    Don't bother. I just finished it and was bored to tears. You could
    see the style carryover from the Andromeda Strain but this just
    wasn't nearly as good.

    Summary after the <FF>  SPOILERS

    Norman, a psycologist, wrote a paper for the Carter Administration
    about the formation of a team to investigate the arrival of aliens.
    Many years later the plan is invoked and he is wisked off to the
    south pacific. He and the team find a space ship on the ocean floor
    1000 feet down. They enter the ship, discover its really from the
    U.S. of the future and is unmanned. It has appearntly passed through
    a black hole on the edge of our solar system and returned but missed
    the correct time by a "little bit". (This is the first half of the
    book) The team finds a misterious sphere in the cargo hold an suspect
    it is an alien object. The become trapped on the ocean floor in
    a habitat by weather and continue to investigate the sphere. They
    are threatend by sea monsters, most of the team dies, many psycological
    things start to happen, and ....... I'll save the absolute end
    for those that must read this in spite of what I said above.

664.3I second the "forget it" vote...DECWET::BEAVERThink of it as evolution in action....Thu Aug 04 1988 21:185
    I'd second the vote for don't bother; after the last couple of Michael
    Crichton books I've read, I'd sooner read the Wall Street Journal
    for fiction. Ho Hum.....

    I read it a while back, and was very disappointed. I kept muttering
    to myself, "this just doesn't make any sense". The book seemed
    calculated to be made into a movie or TV special, and the hell with
    the science.

    I thought the ending was pitifully weak.
