Oh god, here I go again. Shards of Honor by Lois McMasters Bujold.
It concerns a war (which starts as a police action) between two
worlds so there are lots of space battles. It also contains a lot
political intrigue as the reason for the war is not what it appears
to be. There are also battles on board the starships and a planet's
surface. The book starts on a survey planet with the space battles
starting about halfway into the book.

| | "Hammer's Slammers" is a reasonable blast and broil book. Author's
     name slips my mind though.

yes, I've been trying to find that but the bookstores here don't
have it. I didn't know it was a sequel. Now I really want to find
	it. liesl

| | Anything by Jerry Pournelle... :-)

    Especially "Footfall" by Niven/Pournelle.
Of course that's not so recent, especially in the USA.

| | If you liked HAMMER'S SLAMMERS, you just may like his THE FORLORN
HOPE. A mercenary Company, "sold out" by their employers, must
fight their way off-planet. Could have been told in novella-size,
but there is enough action to keep going.

Well, based on some of the replies in this note, I bought and started
HAMMERS SLAMMERS. It stunk, I didn't even finish it.

I guess I like the blasting to go hand in hand with a plot.

| 654.12 | Slammed! | STRATA::RUDMAN | Pledged To Protect Us All. | Tue Sep 26 1989 14:31 | 15 |
| | ...SLAMMERS wasn't a novel, but s.s. strung together. No plot-thread
other than what do you do when you're sick of the mercenary business,
    but plenty of blasting.

For battles (& such) with minumum blasting try THE FLEET ("Pledged
To Protect Us All") series. All s.s.; most are entertaining. so
far (IMS), there's THE FLEET, :COUNTERATTACK, & :BREAKTHROUGH.
I think the fourth is due out next May. Basically, the rat-like
Khalia staged so many raids the humans & their allies declared
war on them. The stories range from espionage to space battles,
suicide troops to victimized civilians. I liked it enough to stick
with it, & will buy #4. (I'd planned on doing a more in-depth review,
    but...)
