634.0. "SF Novels for beginners" by BALZAC::NAOUM () Fri Jun 17 1988 07:27

    Hello,
I am a new arriver to the SF fan club.
The few books I've read :

KING OF STARS (Ed Hamilton) I'm not sure of the title.

RETURN TO THE STARS (Ed Hamilton)

    MORE THAN HUMAN (Sturgeon)

    THE FORGOTTEN PLANET

One of Arthur Clarke's books; It talked about the destruction of earth
and the travel of a colony of men to a planet called SAGAN II after
stopping in a planet called THALASSA.(I have read it in French).

What novels do you advice me to start with, because there is a great
difference between the books I've already read.

    Regards
    Marc.

Well, first off, are you more interested in hard science or fantasy?

Also, there is already a topic on suggested reading but I didn't
look up it's number before I started writing.

At any rate, no matter what you like, Asimov is always good and a
	great place to start. liesl

Try the big 3, Asimov, Heinlein, and Clarke.

If you enjoyed THE STAR KINGS, Hamilton also wrote the STARWOLF
trilogy (easier to find as STARWOLF! instead of searching for
THE WEAPON FROM BEYOND, THE CLOSED WORLDS, and WORLD OF THE STARWOLVES.
In a similar vein, try Harrison's THE DEATHWORLD TRILOGY.

If you enjoyed the more serious Sturgeon--don't stop now!

    							Don

P.S. I recently re-read THE STAR KINGS, and enjoyed it then second
time. AAMOF, When I bought STARWOLF! for THE CLOSED WORLDS
I reread the other two stories. (Then, less than 2 months
later. I found THE CLOSED WORLDS in single issue. Oh, well,
at least I completed the set.)

re: .4

This may be off track, but i seem to remember reading part
of a sequel to _The Star Kings_ serialized in some magazine
like _Amazing_ during the early or mid '60s. Did a sequel
ever make it into book form?

Yes, it was entitled RETURN TO THE STARS, and was published in
paperback by Paperback Library. Both books were back in print
sometime around 10 years ago from Warner Books (the successor
to Paperback Library), but I don't think they've been in print
    since.

My memory betrays me (I shall give it a good whipping!). RETURN
TO THE STARS was published by Lancer, and apparently, only THE
STAR KINGS was reprinted by Warner circa 10 years ago. I was
probably thinking of WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE and AFTER WORLDS COLLIDE
as being reprinted together by Warner at that time.

634.8Collected stories - One way to startWIMPY::MOPPSWed Jan 11 1989 09:3211
This may be some what late but my intoduction to good sifi was through
purchase of a set of three books "The Best Science Fiction Of All
Time" for a course in creative writing. I have seen others of this
type since then but generally the format is one book is dedicated
to short stories, the second is dedicated to novillas, and the last
is for novels (short novels :-) ). My set happened to use the
historical approach and I found this to be of great benefit.

I must have liked these stories, as I have read them at least 2-3
    times each. My $.02...Les

Are you sure you don't mean _The_Science_Fiction_Hall_Of_Fame_,
the first volume edited by Robert Silverberg? If you do, there's
at least a fourth volume, adding stuff that was written since the
first three were compiled. (I had to get the first 3 for a science
fiction writing course I had in high school, but got the 4th just
    for completeness' sake.)
