| I did watch the "Return of the Hulk" movie the other night (I watched
all the episodes when it was on Prime Time television). The movie
had NEW TV series written all over it, not just for the THOR series
but also "The Incredible Hulk". However, I haven't heard of any
official release of if it's coming to television. Are they still
taking polls of the ratings from the other night, then publish the
announcement?
BTW, I though the movie kind of fell apart towards the end.
SPOILER for those Baby M watchers that tapped it and haven't seen it yet.
To have the movie finish just like every TV episode was a little out
of line. First gripe is, he had comfortable living with his new
job, why not just take off in a car, or a plane ticket someplace?
To just walk away with the overnight bag (probably loaded with
100 flannel shirts and dungaries) didn't make sense.
He could have duplicated a false circuit module instead of "frying"
the original. If he loved Maggie (I think was her name) so much,
he could have told her everything, I think she knew anyways.
So another superhero is amoung us. The mighty THOR. There was
kind of a good character chemistry between Thor and Don, but we'll
have to see what happens on television. Remember Captain America,
it lasted only one season I think.

re -.2 : I agree. This Thor seemed to be missing something from
when I read it in the comic books years ago. Maybe its his hair
- not blonde enough? Or his costume. It looked pretty dull. I
imagined it as being flashier, I suppose. Maybe its just the actor.
Did you see "adventures In Babysitting"? The guy playing Thor
looked the part.

| I rather liked it. While it's a far cry from the comic book Thor
(but, then, how many superheroes get transferred to tv intact?),
I thought they did a reasonable job with the character.
It may be more appropriate to continue this discussion in
COOKIE::COMICS. There's a note already set up about comics->TV
transfers.

The Marvel Comics character of Thor *is* the Norse God of
Thunder, but he functions in the Marvel Universe as a superhero.

| He was also on television along with The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain
America and a couple of others. Remember the cartoon series where
just their mouths moved?
Thor also had an archenemy in almost all his episodes. Anyone
remember his name? He was relative, Lupo or something like that.

| Re .6 (Mike_L):
The "archenemy" was Loki, Norse god of ... well, the closest thoughts
are Discord or Chaos. The beauty of using the Norse pantheon as
comic-book characters is that they've well established stories and
the characters are royalty-free.

| RE .4 (My note) and .5 (Jerry's response)
The fact that Marvel and the TV show use Thor as a Superhero and
not a God is exactly my point Jerry. It wasn't meant as a particularly
in depth commentary, more like a cynical commentary on the whole
"Superhero" idea.

Actually, Marvel waffles back and forth as to how they present
Thor. Mostly, he's treated as another superhero, with his "rogues
gallery" of villains, etc., etc. Every once in a while, there
will be a period in which the storylines run in a more mythological,
heroic fantasy sort of vein. I, personally, find these sorts of
stories better on the whole than the more superhero oriented.

| re TV show's Thor:
I reviewed the tape of the show last nigfht (my wife hadn't seen
it), and at one point, the "hero" Thor said, when talking about
getting back Banner's girlfriend unharmed, "I, Thor, son of Odin,
do swear it!" That sounds like more than just a "heroic warrior."

622.12 | "Trial of the Incredible Hulk" | TUNER::FLIS | Let's put this technology to work... | Mon May 08 1989 13:47 | 17 |
| Did anybody catch the Trial of the Increadible Hulk last night?
I'm a big hulk fan (bixby/ferigno) but was apalled at the movie
last night. The IH was always set in a somewhat beleivable environment
(after accepting the fact of the hulk), but this movie was something
right out of spiderman or superman. I was real disapointed with
the evil character, his portrail and the involvement of the Daredevil.
Also, the ending was the worst.
The movie was listed as a premire. Does anybody know if this was
a lead in to a series? And if so, a series about Daredevil or the
Hulk? Hope it's the Hulk and I hope they return to the 'formula'
that worked so well with the original series.

I didn't catch this particular film, as I was napping at the time
(it wasn't high on my list of priorities anyway).
To answer your question, as I understand it, what is planned is
an irregular series of Hulk tv movies, each one "guest-starring"
a different Marvel character as possible try-outs for their own
shows. Last time, it was Thor, this time Daredevil, next time ???.

| Re: .12:
I personally found the Daredevil character (and the ending with the
Big Boss flying away) to feel more true to a serial comic genre than the
old series did.
After all, in the comics I remember, the Hulk was in league with "the
other guys" in super-herodom, not a slightly mutated person in an otherwise
normal world. (Well, ok, big and green may be more than slightly mutated,
but ... :-)
I'm glad I saw it, I can't really give great recommendations for it, but for
entertainment, it suited me. (I was stuck in a hotel room thousands of miles
from home, so it beat out whatever else was on at the time at least.)
