It frequently amazes me how this Conference so infrequently
discusses so many famous SF television series and films. I know
some of them have their own Conferences, and UCOUNT::TV and MOVIES
does discuss some of them, but I also feel they deserve their own
Topics here in SF, where they really belong, so that we can have
an in-depth examination of the intricate details of these SF works
from a point of view missed by the general media Conferences.
One film I am referring to in particular is ZARDOZ, made in
1973 by John Boorman (Of EXCALIBUR and HOPE AND GLORY fame). While
many I know either end up hating or loving it, ZARDOZ is without
doubt a true and intellectual SF film. It stars Sean Connery as
Zed, an Exterminator in the year 2293 whose purpose in life is to kill
off the Brutals for a mysterious god named Zardoz, which is actually
a huge flying robot head made by a group of immortal scientists; or
at least that is what they were at one time, before Earth collapsed
from its own misuse by humanity. The themes presented in this film
are blessedly *not* for the mindless popcorn-chewing masses.
This Topic is for discussing ZARDOZ, as well as announcing that
the film will be shown for those in the Boston area on Channel 38
(WSBK-TV, Ind.) on Saturday, April 23 at 10 p.m..

I, for one, absolutely hated this film. I saw it when it went around
in '73. Or at least most of it. I walked out after the revelation
of the derivation of the name ZARDOZ. Gag.

Not just some*one*. Well, I wouldn't say that I "loved" it, but
I liked it quite a bit.
The origin of the name "Zardoz" is entirely appropriate, given the
nature of Zardoz. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Zardoz is one of my favorite movies. I know that the story
has holes in it, and some of the situations are a bit "hokey", but
as a film I think that it is quite good. The imagery, background
music, and pacing are excellent in my opinion.
The movie presented me with a puzzle, I enjoy it when I'm not
thrown the entire picture in a clear easy to follow format.
I haven't seen the film in several years now, but I'll guarantee
you that I will see it again sometime. I'll have more to say about
it when I do see it again.

Zardoz and the Day the Earth stood Still, have to be 2 of my most
favorite. In Zardoz does anyone catch the moment where they spoof
Sean Connery 007 character Yep its in there. And what other movie
would Sean be in drag...and a wedding gown no less.
My favorite scene was with the lovemaking and the transfer of knowledge
at the same time. It wasn't pornigraphic just very beutiful, wish
we could all "transfer files like that ;')"
