590.0. "Jittlov's Wizard of Speed & Time" by MANANA::RAVAN (Tryin' to make it real...) Mon Mar 07 1988 09:57

A recent usenet article mentioned a full-length film from Mike Jittlov
called (yep) "The Wizard of Speed and Time," which is - more or
less - the story of the making of the original short film of the
same title. If anyone should hear of this film being screened anywhere
near the Boston area, I'd love to see it.

    Additional info welcome.

Jittlov used to (maybe still does, but I don't get the magazines
anymore) advertise in STARLOG and/or FANTASTIC FILMS, selling
copies of some of his works on 16mm film. When I saw him at a con
a short while later, I asked him if it was possible to get them
on videotape. He said he didn't want to sell them on tape because
they're too easy to make copies from. Not that making a copy of
a 16mm film onto videotape isn't easy, but Joe Average doesn't
have the equipment to do so.

He may have changed his mind since then, but I doubt it.

On the other hand, I do still have a tape I made of a Disney program
on special effects for which Jittlov originally did the short version
of "Wizard", so I *do* have "Wizard" on tape.

The Wizard of Speed and Time is being shown from Labor Day untill Tonight at the
Nickelodian near Kenmore Square Near Boston University. I hope that you *have*
seen it.

Everyone should see it at least once; it takes at least a dozen times to
actually *see* everything in the film. The full length version uses a lot of
parts Mike's shorts: Wizard..., Animoto, and Swing Shift. I've seen them all at
least a dozen times five years ago. It's very sad to me, that it's taken this
long for Mike's work to come out of the closet at least in part. I have to say
that I was hoping for some new special effects from Mike, but there wasn't much.
I'd really like to see the shorts again, just for their blinding nonstop special
effects instead of seeing bits and pieces of them in the movie. But what the
movie does give, which I am really gratefull to see, is a view of what Mike
Jittlov is (supposedly) like as a person.

I don't think that the 'hitchhiker' is the original girl, so I'm betting that
that part of that was reshot.

590.4Great film!RUBY::BOYAJIANWhen in Punt, doubtFri Sep 22 1989 03:2333
I just came back from seeing this, and I thought it was absolutely
*phenomenal*. I'm only sorry that I didn't make an effort to see
it a few weeks ago so that I could urge you all to go see it.

In many superficial ways, it doesn't look like a polished Hollywood
production, but then, it isn't. It'll never be up for any Oscars,
but this is what movie-making is all about. It's a knock on the head
of the union-infested, dollars-in-the-eyes producers, and everything
that's wrong with the film industry today. It's a story about
    actualizing your dreams.

For those who know a fair amount of what Jittlov has done and has
gone through, there are a lot of in-jokes, and I'd easily believe
that quite a bit of what's in this film is autobiographical. The
"Dr. Magic" footage, for instance, is a demo film he made for a
shot at the DR. STRANGE made-for-tv movie, and I'm sure that the
HOLLYWOOD'S GREATEST SPECIAL EFFECTS special, for which he was
making the "Wizard" short in this film was probably based on the
Disney special effects program that he originally made "Wizard"
    for.

I loved every minute of it, and not just for the (very special)
    special effects.

    re:.3

I agree that Cindy was not the original girl, though I'd have to
check my copy of the short to be sure. At any rate, the "Wizard"
short in this film was entirely (or at least almost so) re-shot.
In many ways, I prefer the original version, mostly because this
version is a little *too* polished, but I still like the new version.

I think this is actually serious. I got it off the net and have
no reason to doubt its origin, although I haven't tried it yet.

...Actually, you can call Mike Jittlov at "anytime before the witching
hour, PST" at 213-MOJANOX (his "secret Hollywood numbah"). He's very
friendly at will chat at length (if time permits) with almost anyone.
You might get his mom, occasionally, though. But she's nice too.

590.6maybe in Maynard ...NATASH::HYATTThu Oct 05 1989 13:4613

Monday, I went past the Maynard Fine Arts theater
on rte 62, and thought that I saw a sign in the
window saying that the Wizard of Speed and Time
was playing on Sat & Sun at 4:00pm.

Does anyone know if this is true? I called their
number (897-2100) and got the recorded listing, but
	the Wizard was not listed.

I got to see this last weekend. I loved it. My husband only said,
"Cute, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again."

    I would.

590.11Video tape source and newsgroup pointer...NRSTA2::GUENTHERCybersurfing dinosaurSun Mar 20 1994 08:2146
Since I had asked about video earlier in this stream, I thought that some
of the readers here might be interested in the following. First there
is a Mike Jittlov news group in which he participates, and second that
the Wizard of Speed and time tape is available at a very low price...

I ordered the tape, and can't say that I was as impressed with it as
with the original short films of his that I saw at a Boskone eons ago,
but I still consider it worth having. The movie contains clips of his
earlier works, but they removed "Downtown" from Animatio.

If you like in-jokes, then I'm told that this is the movie for
you. I did see it about 5 years ago but missed most of the
in-jokes because I wasn't aware they were there, and therefore
    	didn't watch for them.

The original MOVIES conference had a good discussion on this
    	film.

I'm pleased with the tape, it was well worth the $20 I paid. I
probably would have paid that for just the Wizard short. I thought
the movie as a whole was a bit slow, but perhaps that's only in comparison
to the frenetic pace of the Wizard short... And his other short pieces
    too...
