557.0. "Convention information?" by CSMSRE::WRIGHT (9 Lives loses vs. 18 wheels!) Wed Jan 06 1988 13:23

A quick plea for any information on a couple of upcoming (and distant)
conventions. If you have any information on these or know where
I can get some information please let me know.

The conventions that I am interested in are:

    Balticon,
    Lunacon,
    Genericon,
    Disclave,
    Unicon

and anyothers that I have missed that are coming up. I had a fairly
good idea of what was where and when until I spent 6 months back
    at school with no money.

Thanks for the help and information,

    Clark.

Lunacon is usually held in March. I'm sorry I don't have any specific
    dates.

Balticon is almost (just to be safe) always held on Easter weekend,
which this year is April 1-3. I, however, go to Minicon, which is
    the same weekend.

Disclave is almost (again, just to be safe) always held on Memorial
Day weekend, which this year is May 27-30.

                         WISCON
                  February 19-21, 1988
    		   Madison, Wisconsin

Once again, it is time for WISCON, Madison's annual science
fiction convention, with an emphasis on feminist science fiction
(though not exclusively devoted to it). There will be a film program,
masquerade, huckster room, and art room. Registration is $15 until
January 31, and $20 at the door. To write for membership, the address
is SF3, PO Box 1624, Madison, WI 53701-1624. For more information,
tlephone 1-608-251-6226.

I attended this convention last year and enjoyed it. It is a
small convention, so you can actually meet the guests, with an
emphasis on programming (very good programming, as a matter of fact).
I recommend it (Please do not write to me with questions, though, as I
am not a member of the convention committee and would not know the answer).

			 GUESTS

R.A. MacAvoy is the John W. Campbell award winning author of the
"Damiano" trilogy, "Tea With the Black Dragon," "Twisting the Rope,"
"The Book of Kells," and most recently "The Grey Horse."

George R.R. Martin is the award winning author of "The Armageddon
Rag," and the editor of "Wild Cards" and "New Voices 1-4." He also
worked as story editor of the 1986 "Twilight Zone" television series,
and is currently working on "Beauty and the Beast."

Stu Shiffman is a self described "seven time Hugo loser," and is
the editor of the fanzine "Potsherd."

			BANQUET

This year, we are having a buffet-style banquet featuring three
entrees (one of which will be vegetarian), three vegetable dishes, and
four salads. The banquet will be followed by speeches by the guests of
honor, which will be open to all convention members. A limited number
of tickets are available at $10 each, and should be ordered in advance.

			 HOTEL

The con will be held at the Holiday Inn #2 at the intersection of
US Hwys 12 & 18 and Interstate 90. Rooms: Single $40, double $46,
triple $49, quad $52. Make sure to mention Wiscon for these rates.
Make reservations by phone, or by sending a check to the hotel.
Check-in time is 4 pm, rooms without guaranteed reservations will be
held until 6 pm. Make reservations by calling locally 22-9121 or
state and nationally 1-800-465-4329, or by writing Holdiay Inn #2,

With the number of convention announcements appearing in this
newsgroup recently, all in the USA, I feel that a contribution from
this side of the water is needed to even things up a little. :->

The following is the announcement for the annual Glasgow
convention ALBACON. The wording is [almost] the organiser's. The #
symbol is used to denote pounds sterling. (it does on my terminal).

A Short story contest is also being held in conjunction with the
Glasgow Herald to "encourage new science fiction writers" If anyone is
interested, either mail me (and I will think about typing in the
information sheet I have) or get in touch with the organisers and ask
for a rulesheet.

NOTE - IMPORTANT: I am not involved in any way with the
organising of the conference. I am just supplying information for the
readers of this newsgroup.

			ALBACON 88

29 July - 1st August 1988, Central Hotel, Glasgow. [Scotland]

Albacon 88 is the latest in a series of large anc succesful
science fiction conventions held north of the [Scottish] border.

In 1988 we will be celebrating 10 years of Glasgow conventions.
Previous guests include Harlan Ellison, Norman Spinrad, Joe Haldeman,
Bob Shaw, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Harry Harrison, David Brin, Anne
McCafferty, John Brunner, and Clive Barker. In 1988 we will continue
our policy of bringing famous and rising Science Fiction authors by
having C. J. Cherryh as Guest of Honour.

Albacon will have the full programme and facilities expected of a
large National Convention, including over a dozen SF films, talks and
panels, (some serious and scientific, some nothing like), a Book
Auction, where you can buy a book collection or bid to have the
auctioneer eat your least favourite work, a dealers (Hucksters) room,
with book dealers from all over Britain, a fancy dress show, Art Show
with auction, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, (with and without
audience participation), Spaceflight, and media programmes.

Albacon will have VERY LATE OPENING, (or if you prefer, very early
opening) bars serving REAL ALE. The organising committee are among
the most experienced in Britain, having run 13 previous conventions,
including 3 British National Eastercons.

Held in one of the best convention sites in Britain, Glasgow's
CENTRAL HOTEL, Albacon has the enthusiastic support of the frendliest
and most co-operative hotel staff in Britain. Room rates will be:
Triple - #14, Twin - #15.50, Twin + Bath - #19, Single - #18, Single +
bath - 19.50, all per person per night and inclusive of VAT and
breakfast. Hotel booking forms will be available in our first Progress
Report.

Two international airports and excellent road and rail links make
Glasgow one of the most accessible cities in Europe. The city is also
a major tourist attraction, especially with the Garden Festival being
held next summer, and anyone going on a tour of Scotland will find
Glasgow an excellent base.

"Albacon is a cross between a big relaxacon
	 and a small Worldcon."

                                 - Norman Spinrad.

I haven't been there for a couple of years, but there's a con called
Esotericon that would meet in mid-January in New Brunswick (I think..)
New Jersey. As its name implies, it concentrates on the magic and
occult in SF, Fantasy, and modern life. You can meet some very
nice and friendly people there. But I don't have anything recent
on it. Have you checked in Locus, or SF Chronicle, or Asimov's?

Has there ever been a con in Colorado? I've only ever seen STAR
TREK cons advertized here and while I do love ST I'd be more
interested in a SF or F general interest gathering. I just can't
see spending the bucks to go back east alone to something I'm not
sure about but I'm real curious about them. liesl

The BASH 1990 is two weekends following the Creation show.

IMHO, The BASH is a lot better...put on by people who care
about Star Trek. The Platinum Convention was great!!

Support your local Fan Club! Go to the BASH instead of the
	Creation show!

Additional info:

I talked with one of the promoters of the BASH. I mentioned
that I would be putting this on the DECNET, and they offered,
for DECNET folks and friends, preregistration after 12/15, and
weekend memberships at the door will be $30 when you use this
	E-Net form.

Michael Dorn will be very available to fans. He will be at
the banquet, the charity auction, signing autographs and speaking.

The Sheraton-Tara will have special discount rates: $83 a night,
Friday night thru Monday. This rate is double to quad occupancy,
ie: $20.75 per person quad rate. I don't have the number handy,
	call 617 555-1212, ask for Braintree Sheraton-Tara.

The banquet will be Saturday night. The banquet is at extra,
check off banquet info on the above form. A dance will follow,
which will be open to all attendees of the BASH.

My opinions:

I'll be at the show. IMHO, This is a mini-Noreascon for Star Trek
only. A mature crowd that appreciates Star Trek. I attended the
Platinum and BASH 1984, had a GREAT time at both!

I was concerned about the Creation show, which is two weekends prior,
impacting attendance for the BASH, but apparently, from the good
response from preregistrations, this is no longer a concern.
Apparently many people are getting more and more tired of the
Creation show. More bucks to see the same guests over and over
again. For example, Nichelle Nichols was at the Providence show
in Sept. It was a DEAD show. Half the dealers left and didn't
stay for Sunday. Creation actually refunded table costs to the
dealers it was so poor. George Takei, who has been in the area
a number of times, will be at the Boston Creation show.

Creation is profit oriented, BASH is fun oriented.

Send me mail, or post if you need some info clarified.

	Dan
