553.0. "The Helmsman" by MAADIS::WICKERT (MAA DIS Consultant) Fri Dec 11 1987 14:36

I just finished a two book series by Bill Baldwin (I think). The
first is called "The Helmsman" with it's sequel being "Galatic Convoy".

If you're looking for a book with no heavy statements and just want
some adventure I'd suggest these two.

It felt like I was reading Captain Horatio Hornblower in outer space.

    I really enjoyed them both.

I agree,I read the first book some months ago and find myself
going back to it when I need very light enjoyable stuff.
The funny part is that when I was reading it first, the author's
way of capitalizing "BIG SCIENTIFIC" things names was putting me
    off.
Basically I would not compare it to the Hornblower series,it
reminded me more of the "local boy makes good in the big wicked
world" as in a lot of "space cadet" novel written in the fifties
or so and that's the reason I liked it (I think)even though
the villains and the good guys are too stereotyped.

    RE: The Helmsman

I read this book last year. If there is a sequel available to it,
I really will go out and buy it immediately. I enjoyed HELMSMAN
very much and highly recommend it.
