548.0. "Outer Limits" by SALEM::STOBER () Tue Dec 01 1987 12:40

                          -{ OUTER LIMITS}-

I'M A NEWCOMER TO YOUR SF NOTES AND I'M FINDING IT QUITE
     INTERESTING AND ENJOYABLE.
I'M A BIG FAN OF THE OLD 60'S SF SHOW THE OUTER LIMITS AND
     AM LOOKING FOR THE SAME.
THERE WAS ONE EPISODE WHERE ANTS TOOK OVER A TOWN. CAN ANYONE
NAME THE SHOW AND WHO STARRED IN IT. A FRIEND OF MINE HAS BEEN
ASKING ME ABOUT THIS EPISODE AND I CANT SEEM TO REMEMBER.
ALSO, DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MANY OF THESE EPISODES ARE ON VHS
     NOW. GIVE TITLES IF POSSIBLE!

                                        THANKS
                                              KARL

First of all, please use upper *and lower* cases when entering
notes. All upper case is more difficult to read and it looks like
    you're shouting.

The episode with the "ants" was called "The Zanti Misfits" and
starred Bruce Dern (yes, *that* Bruce Dern) and a bunch of people
    I've never heard of.

As far as I know, only the first three episodes have been released
    on videotape. They are:

"The Galaxy Being", starring Cliff Robertson as radio station
engineer who makes contact with a creature from another planet.
And accidental boost in signal power causes the alien to be
teleported to Earth, where its mere presence causes destruction.

"The Hundred Days of the Dragon" is about an Asian power that
develops a serum that can make flesh into putty so that a person's
face can be reshaped. They change an agent of theirs into a double
of a US Presidential candidate, who ends up winning the election.

"The Architects of Fear" is probably one of the most well-known
episodes. It stars Robert Culp as a scientist who is chosen to
be bio-engineered into a copy of a alien lifeform in order that
he may make the Earth nations band together by making them think
that a alien race may obliterate them.

Thank you for the advice,Jerry, will do.

          released,The Sixth Finger (David MacCallum),The
Inheritors, and one other starring Mr. MacCallum based
on a man obsessed with time while bringing men back
        to life

Incidentally, the last-named McCallum one (I'm surprised that
they aren't releasing the rest in order), "The Forms of Things
Unknown" was a pilot for a different, unsold series called
    THE UNKNOWN.

There is a trade paperback available, the title and author of
which escape me at the moment, that's all about THE OUTER LIMITS.
It came out about a year ago.

In Note 296.24, a fellow SF Noter was kind enough to make available
numerous files which give brief synopsies of every episode of some
of the most popular SF television series, of which THE OUTER LIMITS
is included. Just COPY over the files to your account from his
    pointer in that Note.

There is also an excellent book out in the mass-market
bookstores which goes into intimate detail on all of THE OUTER LIMITS
episodes, plus a background history of the series. It is done in a
format similar to the book on THE TWILIGHT ZONE, which came out in 1984.

The pilot episode was "The Galaxy Being", which I synopsized in
    548.1.

Incidentally, I've seen at least one other TOL tape out: "The Man
with the Power" (the fourth episode), starring Donald Pleasance.

The book that Larry mentions in .5, and I mentioned in .3 is:

THE OUTER LIMITS: THE OFFICIAL COMPANION by David J. Schow and
Jeffrey Frentzen, Ace Books [trade paperback] 0-441-37081-0,
    1986, $8.95.

Topic 53 in the UCOUNT::TV Conference has a discussion going
on THE OUTER LIMITS, including the latest news on available videotapes
featuring TOL. In fact, there are a number of SF TV series discussed
in TV to a much greater degree than in this Conference. Hmmm...

    Re .8 (Larry):

    For What it's worth,

_The Galaxy Being_ was the first episode telecast. It involved
a powerful radio station broadcasting in the Pacific Coast and a
    form of teleportation.

_The Sixth Finger_ was the story of a person who gets "mutated"
to later stages of human evolution, growing a sixth finger/hand
in the process. The bitter young man who plays the role of the
experimental subjecty isd David McCallum, of _Man From U.N.C.L.E._
    fame.

Yo! I couldn't find a topic on the Outer Limits, so I thought I'd
start one with a question. (if there *is* such a topic please feel
free to move this or ask me to)

I am looking for the quoted opening of the Outer Limites (at least
*I* think it was the outer limites. The opening where your tv screen
screws up and a narator says something like "there is nothing wrong
    with your TV set..."

I am looking for the exact quote, start to finish. Can anybody
    help???

    thanx,
    jim

There are two version, one longer, one shorter. The shorter one
    goes something like this:

"There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt
to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. We will
control the horizontal. We will control the verticle. We can change
the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the
next hour, sit back quietly and we will control all that you see
and hear. You will experience the awe and mystery which reaches
from the inner mind to...The Outer Limits."

The longer version adds a couple of sentences about making the
picture larger and smaller, but I don't recall the exact wording.
The above is from memory. I'll have to check my copy of THE OUTER
LIMITS COMPANION to get the whole thing.

I noticed that there are now about 20 to 25 titles available for sale
at a local video store. How many episodes were produced altogether?

548.14MoreDRUMS::FEHSKENSlen, EMA, LKG1-2/W10Tue Jan 05 1993 14:277
I subscribed to the Columbia House collection. They send me a tape of
two episodes every month or so, for $19.95. I think there are
something like 44 or 46 episodes total available. I don't know how
    many were actually produced.
