537.0. " SF Encyclopedia" by CSMSRE::HIGINBOTHAM (what th'?!..) Mon Oct 26 1987 11:04

I'm not sure I'll be totally accurate here, but let's
see if memory serves: I have a copy of the"Encyclopedia of
Science Fiction" by a Britisher named Peter Nicholls circa
1977 (?) which I've referred to many times, and enjoyed
immeasurably. I'd like to know if an updated version is
available, or barring that, an equally intelligent and
entertaining substitute. I have seen a few juvenile works
(lots of pictures from SF movies) and some skinny little
reference works, but I'm looking for something new, thick,
    and serious in intent.

Nicholls' SCIENCE FICTION ENCYCLOPEDIA has, unfortunately,
not been revised/updated yet. I wish it was otherwise.

Neither is there a reasonable substitute. A small press,
Advent, issued a three volume ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION
AND FANTASY, compiled by Donald Tuck, some time back, but it's
ridiculously out of date. Everything else I know of is straight
    bibliography

I know almost six years is a little late to reply but
it has been worth the wait.

A fully revised and updated version is now available.

Edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls it is published in the
U.K. by Little, Brown and Co. and is due to be published in the
U.S. by St Martin's Press in June 1993.

It is about 1400 pages long and has a myriad of entries that kept
even a not particularly devout SF person like me busy for a while.

Over here it retails for UK#45.00.

I know all this as a friend works for Little, Brown in the U.K. and
was involved in the editing process.

Clute says his next project will be an encyclopedia for fantasy and
horror. By the time it shows up, our checking/chequing accounts may
have recovered from the sf one.
