496.0. "Carlos Casteneda" by BUFFER::HOFFMAN (Joan Hoffman, DTN: 276-9829) Fri Jun 26 1987 16:39

I haven't seen a base note about this in this file, and I'm not sure if SF
is the right place, but...Has anyone read the Carlos Casteneda novels about
his learning to be a bruja (witch) in Mexico thanks to Don Juan? If so,
what do you think? I am fascinated by this series, and enjoy each book.
Castaneda simply disappears for years at a time, and then another book
comes out with his exploits. It's hard to believe that this is non-fiction,
but definitely can be discussed as either science fiction and/or fantasy.
Who knows? Perhaps brujas do exist, but not the stereotypical witches.

Glad you called it fiction. However, some people call it fact.

I read his first book _Journey_to_Ixtalan_. It read like someone who

You're right, he took peyotes, but the effects and experiences he
described are similar to what I've heard about LSD or other
    mind-expanding drugs.

The active ingredient in peyote is mescaline which is an hallucinogen like LSD.

If I'm not mistaken the first book is "The Teachings of Don

"The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge" is the first
    book.

"Journey to Ixtlan" is either the second or third; "Tales of Power"
    goes in there somewhere...

"A Separate Reality" is the second, "Journey to Ixtlan" the third. I
think "Tales of Power" is the fourth, but i stopped after Ixtlan. It
seemed too perfect to require any more sequels.

You're missing huge chunks of Carlos' education; definitely read "The
    Second Ring of Power"

Can you really consider this guy as science fiction? I still think it
    reads like a drug trip.

Not really, but I didn't start the topic.

I'm not sure WHAT it is. Carlos has a degree in Anthro from UCLA -- he
says it's genuine research. But it is pretty unbelievable.

If I recall, the first book ends with a whole bunch of sociological
    extrapolation about his experience.

I once read a set of criticisms about the series which had some very
interesting pieces debating whether his work was fact or fiction. the
passion on both sides of the issue were very well expressed and
enjoyable read. I don't remember the title or editor but I think the
title was derived from one of the titles of Castaneda's works.
