451.0. "Margaret St. Clair?" by CGHUB::CONNELLY (Eye Dr3 - Regnad Kcin) Mon Feb 23 1987 23:36

Has anyone else read anything by Margaret (sp?) St. Clair? Around
1962 or 1963 I read a book by her called "Sign of the Labrys" that
still sticks in my head because of its hints of feminism and paganism.

I have a feeling she may have written another few short stories and
novels since then. Does anybody know what those might be? Is "Sign
of the Labrys" still available anywhere? (I'd love to re-read it!)

Does anyone know what became of her?

Unfortunately, I believe that she died recently. I'll have to
check my last few SF CHRONICLES. She was born in 1911 and was
pretty much retired for about the last 10 years, except for
about four short stories that appeared circa 1980.

Here is what I can give you for a bibliography:

    AGENT OF THE UNKNOWN 1956
    THE GREEN QUEEN 1956
    THE GAMES OF NEITH 1960
    SIGN OF THE LABRYS 1963
    MESSAGE FROM THE EOCENE 1964
THREE WORLDS OF FUTURITY 1964	[collection]
    THE DOLPHINS OF ALTAIR 1967
    THE SHADOW PEOPLE 1969
    THE DANCERS OF NOYO 1973
CHANGE THE SKY AND OTHER STORIES	1974	[collection]
THE BEST OF MARGARET ST. CLAIR	1985	[collection]

Together, the collections account for about of her short
story output, under her own name and her pseudonym Idris
Seabright. None of her books ever had more than one edition,
and the last-listed collection is the only thing likely to
    be still in print.

Thanks for that info, Jerry, especially the pen name.

Margaret St. Clair writes memorable stuff. My favorite was "Minister
Without Portfolio," wherein a woman saves the world thanks to her poor
eyesight. That was in an anthology called "Invaders of Earth," edited
  by Anthony Boucher.

Try THE DOLPHINS OF ALTAIR (if you can find it); it was one of
    her best.
