| First, a clarification: I _Like_ _The Stars My Destination_ very
much.
However, having said that, science-fiction it ain't. A good and
rather powerful story; however, it has things that are scientific
absurdities, such as rubble following in Gully Foyle's "wake" when
he was stranded in space, and the "Burning Man" burning _in a vacuum_.
Sorry, a good story, but a fantasy.
You want something closer to SF from Bester, try _The Demolished
Man_.

| Agreed - however, I was about 16 when I first read it. I thought
it was a great story and wasn't particularly aware of the
non-scientific parts at the time. It did get me interested in SF
as a genre, scientific goofs or not.

| Y'know, Mr. Kallis, it is surprising that so few (it seems) have
read THE DEMOLISHED MAN. I believe I cut some of my SF teeth on
that one. Some of the best can still be found in the book swaps.

| I like "The Demolished Man" very much. I was tickled by the idea
of blocking a telepath with a "mindscreen" consisting of an inane
jingle you can't get out of your head, and I thought the society
depicted was very convincing. Of course, I read it several years
ago -- I might see more holes now.

Not all that surprising... when I first got interested in SF, one
of the collections I bought was "The Hugo Winners", edited by Isaac
Asimov. This collection listed Hugo winning works from 1953 onward.
"The Demolished Man" won the Hugo for Best Novel in 1953. "Fine,"
I said, "I'll go out and buy me a copy of TDM." No way. It was out
of print. I tried the swap shops. Nope, it had been out of print
for a LONG time. They finally re-released it about six years after
I first learned about it.
So it doesn't surprise me that many haven't read TDM -- it's hard
to read a book you can't find.

It's a pun. (and a rather dreadful one at that)
Consider that Wocester is sometimes, especially around here, pronounced
Worst-er. (or WOO-ster, or War-chest-ter, or WATCH-ster...)

| Re. .7: You've got my curiosity up. My copies are from the mid-/late
sixties (no pub. date). Assuming a re-release in the '70s, you
started S F ~1970? Anyway, I think it'll hold up, even after 33
years. Maybe you're not frequenting the right stores. Have you
tried The Book Bear and The Shire?

| I'm sure you were kidding with the pronunciation. Commercials have
been messing up for years.
To set the record straight (remember the last time you read *that*
phrase in here? :-)) Worcester is pronounced like the Woo in Wookie
or would--Wou-ster. Barbarians.
