256.0. "Wellman" by AURORA::RAVAN () Tue Aug 27 1985 18:00

I just heard that Manly Wade Wellman has suffered several recent falls
and has become bedridden at the age of 82(?). He is the author of a goodly
number of books and stories ranging from autobiographical works to fantasy,
and including some of the best ghost and horror stories around; he is also
known for his series of stories and books about John the Balladeer, and
the people and legends of the Appalachians.

If anyone would like to send him any cheery fan mail, the address is:

I have some rather unfortunate news. I heard from a friend this evening
(who, I think, got it from LOCUS) that Wellman has had both legs amputated.
Apparently, gangrene had set in his legs while he was laid up from his
fall. I don't have any more details than this.

According to Harlan Ellison on Hour 25, Wellman died on Saturday April 5th
in Chapel Hill, NC. Although Ellison didn't state the explict cause of
death, it was probably related to the loss of both of Wellman's legs
last year due to hospital incompetence; if not directly then indirectly
through the strain that that incident placed on him.
