I just heard that Manly Wade Wellman has suffered several recent falls and has become bedridden at the age of 82(?). He is the author of a goodly number of books and stories ranging from autobiographical works to fantasy, and including some of the best ghost and horror stories around; he is also known for his series of stories and books about John the Balladeer, and the people and legends of the Appalachians. I have some rather unfortunate news. I heard from a friend this evening (who, I think, got it from LOCUS) that Wellman has had both legs amputated. Apparently, gangrene had set in his legs while he was laid up from his fall. I don't have any more details than this. --- jerry | |||||
