253.0. "Haviland Tuf" by PEN::KALLIS () Tue Aug 20 1985 14:05

For everybody's information:

A story appearing in _Analog_, "Guardians," by George R. R. Martin,
about an ecological engineer named Haviland Tuf launched what appears to be
a new major character. Some "prequels" to this story, including "Plague
Star," have since developed. I understand that these will shortly be col-
lected into book form.

There's a new Haviland Tuf story in the latest Analog. I read it night
before last, but have forgotten the title. I remembered Guardians but
couldn't track it down (do you have a pointer, Steve?). The new one's
good, and I look forward to a collection.

Haviland Tuf stories published so far:

"A Beast for Norn"	ANDROMEDA [1] (ed. by Peter Weston) [British anthology]
			Galaxy	(Sep/Oct 1979)
"Call Him Moses"	Analog	(Feb 1978)
"Guardians" Analog	(Oct 2 1981)
"The Plague Star"	Analog	(Jan, Feb 1985)
"Loaves and Fishes"	Analog	(Oct 1985)

The Tuf series is just a part of a larger future history --- the Manrealm
series --- which includes the bulk of Martin's fiction, including his most
well-known stories, such as "A Song for Lya", "With Morning Comes Mistfall",
"The Way of Cross and Dragon", "Sandkings", and DYING OF THE LIGHT.

George R. R. Martin happens to be one of my favorite authors.

Jerry beat me to it. The Tuf series is particularly good, specially for
aleurophiles, aka cat-lovers.

There's a new Haviland Tuf story in the latest Analog. Tuf returns to
S'(I don't remember the rest) to make an installment on his repair bill,
only to discover things have gotten worse. It was too late last night
to finish it (I fell asleep against my better judgement), but what I
did get through was good if only preparatory.

I've just been introduced to Haviland Tuf - yes, the stories have
finally been collected in paperback. So far (I've started with "Plague
Star") it's funny and intriguing, with a cast of characters vaguely
reminiscent of "Alien" and a mood somewhat like a game of Paranoia".
(For some reason it remindsme a little of"The Witches of Karres,"
too - something in the tone, I think.)

    Definitely worth a look.

I have recently finished the paperback called "Tuf Voyaging",
and thought it was excellent. Is this the only collection of
Haviland Tuf stories?

Yes, it's the only Tuf collection. And there aren't any uncollected
    Tuf stories, either.
