Has anybody read any books or stories by Tim Zahn ? I have read his three novels 'The Blackcollar' (spell ??), 'Cobra' and 'A Coming of Age', and I liked all three. The first two books had terrible covers by Vincent DeFate, of course that is my opinion. I liked 'A Coming of Age' the best of the three. I have just finnished part 3 (of 4) of the serialization of his new novel 'Spinneret' from Analog. So far it's pretty good, I will hold off judgement for at least a month until the next issue appears in my mail box. Anyone interested in reading 'Spinneret' can get issues July-Oct. of Analog. I haven't read 'A Coming of Age' but I thought 'The Blackcollar' was one of the best books I've read in a long time. 'Cobra' was a little drawn out and resembled Blackcollar to much, but it was still good. Blackcollar kept you guessing till the very end. Steve...

I just finished Timothy Zahn's WARHORSE. I found this to be a good book and would recommend it. It starts out a little slow and has a strange twist but rapidly the plot thickens and the action is good. The story has at its base, 2 races - Humans and Tampies. They are struggling to get along with each other. Of course within the human camp there are the pro and anti forces. These forces put two people, one from each camp up as captain and commander of a space ship which will consist of human and tampie crews for purposes of exploration. The primary sources of propulsion for space craft are Mutsuusi drive used by humans and "Space horses" used by tampies. These space horses are telekenetic creatures that are capable of instaneous travel. Of course, the tampies have exclusive rights to the space horses and this is a sore point in the view of many humans. The spaces horses were a strange concept to adjust to but after a couple of chapters, seemed almost believable. The plot develops along the theme of each of the main characters persuing their respective agendas for and against the tampies. In addition, there is a tampie agenda implicit in the exploration. Some interesting twists lead to a good plot and story line. WARHORSE - Timothy Zahn - Baen Books - 1990 - ISBN 0-671-69868-0

These "Space Horses" seem very like Ann McAfferys "Dragons".... Maybe it is a different concept but the similarity seems remarkable. Bob |
