Rather unfortunate news: The latest LOCUS reports that C.L. Moore is in a coma. A report I'd read earlier in SF CHRONICLE mentioned that she's been suffering from Alzheimer's. Things don't look good. Moore, who was the wife of the late Henry Kuttner, has always been high on my list of sf writers. She's most well-known for the outstanding story "Shambleau", as well as her other stories about Northwest Smith, and those of Jirel of Joiry (one of the few heroic fantasy series that I find to be more than just readable). --- jerry

However, perhaps her most intriguing story was one called "Judgement Night," which ought to be a "must read" for students of rich imagination, fascinat- ing technicological and societal extrapolations, and complex plotting. She and the late Henry Kuttner made a superb team, since their styles complemented each other so well. After their marriage, I understand almost all of their separate stories had at least a tinge of collaberation in them. Steve Kallis, Jr. | |||||

The latest issue of SCIENCE FICTION CHRONICLE reports that Moore died last April, although, apparently, it wasn't known until just recently. --- jerry |
