190.0. "Steakley's Armor" by SRVAX::COBB () Tue Apr 02 1985 11:27

HI THERE,
My name is KEN COBB, I am a VMS support specialist at the T.B.U. in
Atlanta, GA. I have been a fan for about 8 years, my first sf/fantasy
books were the Tolkien 'HOBBIT/ LORD of the RINGS' series. My favorite
authors are Stephen King, Tolkien, Asimov, Heinlien and Niven. I prefer
SF to Fantasy, however, I read a lot of both.
I am from Chattanooga, Tn (I'm living in Atlanta now, but, Chattanooga
is still my home.). I work with the group that puts on the CHATTACON convention
every January. The GOH for next CHATTACON will be JAMES P. HOGAN, with artist
GOH Micheal Whelan, I'll give more information later in the year.
Has anybody but me read 'ARMOR' by John Steakley ? I liked the book, it's
about a war with a race of bugs (sound like something you've read before ? even
though it sounds like a rehash of 'STARSHIP TROOPERS' or 'THE FOREVER WAR' it
really is a new plot). The book is about human warriors in powered armor, and
how the person inside the armor is affected by it. I recommend it, with 7 out
of a possible 10 points !

I'd like to hear more of it though...love those suits

I've read armor and thought it was pretty good. Another book along these
lines is WAR GAMES by Karl Hansen. In this book hybridization of humans
using animal DNA, cybernetics, and genetic engineering are at their peak.
The book covers the exploits of one earth aristocrat as he becomes a
criminal, volunteers for the "foreign legions", is hybridized into a
soldier, and ends up fighting elves ( genetically engineered humans ) on
Titan. It is a very gritty book, and the sexual content may offend some
people. Hansen also wrote a sequel called Dream Games.

A third sf book is "The Forever War" by Joe Hadelmann (sp?). The soldiers in
this book wear power suits as in Starship and Armor. There are several
interesting twists such as culture shoock due to relativity and that the
soldiers are all draftees but only the brightest are drafted!
