Yes, the movie is indeed based on Zelazny's book, but like most Hollywood
productions, they've totally adulterated the story in the process. The
film is, at best, OK, but don't expect to see Zelazny's novel on the screen.
It's a relatively old film (1977), and I'm sure that it's been on tv before.

Yes, it was on TV about 2 years ago.. It didn't do too well in
the movies.. I haven't seen it but I did read abot how they
built the truck-thing they use in it. Pretty neat truck..
I think Jan-Michael (Stringefellow Hawke) Vincent is in the movie also..

BTW, I'm trying to get back to this file.. It's tough!

| One of my friends says that the only thing the book and the film have in
common is their title.

Yes, good ol' Jan-Michael is in it, as well as George Peppard.
Incidentally, about the truck --- it appears in a recent Amoco commercial,
the one about the "Road Worrier" (ugh!).

Really??! I haven't been watching too much T.V. lately (you know why
Jerry :-)) so I haven't seen the commercial.. Still, it was a neat
truck... I think they used something very similar in some Saturday
morning show about 5 years ago. The shows on Saturday morning around
that time had alot of "real" shows (ie: real actors/actresses) and there
was one show that had a truck similar to the truck in D.A. I think
the difference in the trucks was the way the wheels were designed.
If I remember correctly the truck in D.A. had wheels like this

And the Saturday morning show had wheels like this...

Other than that they were VERY similar... Maybe the D.A. machine was
made out of metal? I am VERY sure the Saturday morning show truck
was made out of fiberglass. It also had a garage in the back for
a hover-craft type of vehicle...

| The show you're talking about was called "Ark IV", and set in
a post-disaster world. I think it was more like eight to ten years
ago, though.

| It was ARK II, not IV, but you are right on the time. It was on in 1976.

Well, I should have listened to your advice. I saw it last night for the
first time, two words come to mind -- 1) pathetic 2) insulting
pathetic mutilation of a brilliant plot
pathetic characterization
pathetic acting (except for the giant scorpions)
pathetic waste of my time
insulting to a great author to see a skillfully depicted
scenario turned into a saturday morning kiddy show
insulting to any Zelazny fan as I am.

| re .13 right on.
The movie was so weak that they didn't even mention Tanner's name "Hell".
They made a first rate anti-hero into an extra.
Incidently, There are two versions of the written story: Short and long.
"Z" himself prefers the first/short one.

Me too, there is a version of the original short in "The Last
Defender of Camelot", a collection of shorts by "Z". Very much worth
reading ! There are all kinds of goodies ranging from 2 to 150 pages
long.
