| If Shatner wants that much money, let's leave him out and do the movie
anyway! They could always say he resigned his commission, and has retired
to San Francisco to continue collecting antiques.
I love ST, don't get me wrong! I'll continue watching until ST100 if they
keep it up. However, all the actors are getting on, and it's time to do
some refreshing new stuff (blowing up the Enterprise was O.K. the way it
was handled).
Wonder what the plot wil be ????
Otto.

Two days after this note appeared, the AP carried exactly the same
story about Shatner's demands. I guess you CAN believe what you read.
Congratulations to the author of .0 - you scooped the Associated Press!

| I tend to agree. I really like the old characters, but it bothers me
a lot to see the old "they can't possibly die, they gotta be back next
week" plot. Spock's death was very well done, and although I enjoyed
the 3rd movie (the "bit characters" got to do some acting!) I thought it
was a cheap shot just to get Spock back. When someone's dead, leave them
that way and get on with the story.
It would also be nice to see some of the new characters continued and
expanded. Kirk's son is out, I hope they keep Savaak on...

Was that expanded or expended?
I agree - forget the Enterprise, forget the old characters - simply
go to a different "Enterprise" Class ship, and get back to planetary
exploration. I'm tired of the Klingon/Romulan/old enemy conflict
theme.

| Leonard Nimoy just passed through the area and he said that they "hope to
have a writer [For Star Trek IV] in the next 3 or 4 weeks. We hope to shoot
the movie over next summer and then to release it sometime in 1986."

then Nimoy will work for free?

| Paramount will be releasing episodes of ST cut-up by Paramount. They
will still offer the episodes in thier entirety.

| If anyone is interested, Paramount has released a bunch of film cassettes at
discount prices (low $20 range, depending on the store). The first two Star
Trek films and Raiders of the Lost Ark are among them. I bought all three.
They are good bargains for your VCR.

| I picked up ST I and II at the Video Biz store in Nashua for $24.95 each.
(Warning: They didn't have them in stock. I had to wait several days for them
to be delivered from somewhere.)
I saw an ad for Osco Drugs (everyone is getting in the video business!) listing
these for $21.95 each.
This is a special promotion by Paramount. There are about 20 films listed
at the "under $25" price, including "Time Bandits" and "Airplane".
Check it out. It's a good deal!

===============================================================================
I just read in VARIETY that Paramount is going to release STAR TREK III in
February for a suggested retail price of (get this!) $29.95. In addition, they
will be releasing the episodes, in order, for a suggested retail price of
$14.95 each! (One to a T-60 VHS tape, I presume, as opposed to the
two-per-tape previous method.)

I guess they are finally finding out that most people will not pay the
outrageous prices ($80-$120) for a movie that, if they wait a couple of
months, can tape off of HBO or CIMEMAX for the cost of a tape.

| re:.14
Actually, most of the movies that Paramount is now selling at ~$24 are ones
that were originally sold for ~$40 (The noticible exception is DRAGONSLAYER,
which originally went for ~$60). Paramount gambled that by dropping the price
significantly (by half!), the sales would increase in proportion to the
rentals. And they were right. While many of the others big studios haven't
fully gone along with this yet, some have been issuing some of their titles
at the lower price.
What it all comes down to, really, is: it depends on the movie. Some
are worth spending $80 on, some aren't (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, in Hi-Fi,
was *definitely* worth the price --- even if I got the Movie Channel in
stereo, and TMC carried TESB, I'd never get as good a copy). Plus, in some
cases (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK comes to mind), the movie is released on
cassette a full *year* ahead of its appearance on cable.

| A point of clarification on my previous comment (.14). When I said that
Paramount gambled on trying to increase the proportion of sales to rentals
by dropping the price in half, I meant from the previous "norm" of $80 to
$40, not form the "Paramount norm" of $40 to their sale price of $24.

| At lunch today I asked the people at Video Biz in Nashua about the release
of Star Trek III on cassette. They said that it is true. The release date is
February 25th and the suggested retail price is $29.95.

and Shatner have been resolved, with Shatner agreeing to do ST4.Has any
one else heard of this?
