146.0. "Lord Valentine's Castle" by PSYCHE::MCVAY () Tue Oct 16 1984 21:45
by Robert Silverberg
Book One of [4mThe Majipoor Chronicles[0m
General: rousing good story, great characters, and some good design
of another world. It fits nicely between fantasy and sci-fi--this is
one of those rare books that will appeal to fanatics of [1mboth[0m cults,
since the bizarre occurences can be attributed to almost anything, and
are left pleasantly vague.
Valentine wakes up near a town on a vast world: he has no idea who he
is or how he got there, and has only the vaguest notions of how to
live. The remainder of the story is a journey of discovery, as he
finds out how he has been cruelly tricked and robbed of his
inheritance. There are some really nice touches, since he falls in
with a troupe of jugglers, there are long series on his training in
juggling and the entire "philosophy" of juggling. If you aren't a
juggler, this may open a new world for you; if you have juggled, you
will find this a tremendous description of the art. If the other
books in the series are as good as this one, then here is a rare
trilogy.
(The other books: [4mMajipoor Chronicles[0m and [4mValentine Pontifex[0m.)
