90.0. "The Ewoks are coming." by VAXWRK::MAXSON () Mon Jun 18 1984 01:23

Associated Press Fri 15-JUN-1984 18:44 ABC-`Ewok Movie'
`Ewok Movie,' George Lucas' First TV Film, On ABC This Fall
LOS ANGELES (AP) - George Lucas, creator of the ``Star Wars''
trilogy and the ``Indiana Jones'' epics, will make his first
made-for-TV movie, ``The Ewok Movie,'' for ABC this fall.
The film is based on the furry, bear-like characters who
appeared in Lucas' ``Return of the Jedi'' last year. That film
ranks third in all-time theater rentals, behind No. 1 ``E.T.'' and
``Star Wars.''
ABC made the announcement Friday during a press conference for
its upcoming movies and miniseries.
The revelation actually came in unconventional fashion. After
several loud knocks at the door, in came a 4-foot Ewok, who skipped
to the podium and shook hands with several ABC executives,
including Brandon Stoddard, president of ABC Motion Pictures, and
Christy Welker, ABC's vice president for miniseries.
``I thought it was Christy's date,'' joked Stoddard.
Bruce J. Sallan, ABC's vice president for TV movies, said the
production, based on a Lucas story, will be on the air during the
Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season.

What a coincidence! It's being shown just in time to sell lots more
Ewok toys for Christmas. I don't think there's anything wrong with
movie tie-ins, but Lucas is a bit too cold-blooded about it for my
taste. I think that his most recent films were made more to sell
toys than entertain the folks sitting in the theater.

I agree with the preceding reply. My only question is:

Who will the Ewoks fight? The gremlins? Or the Smurfs??

I KNOW!!!!

The Ewoks vs. The Cabbage Patch Dolls!!!!

I wonder if:

	a) One or more Ewoks learn to speak english...
	b) The movie will be narated (like a nature film).. or
	c) The movie will be in Ewok and subtitled in English (or whatever).

In "Return of the Jedi" the Ewoks showed no inclination to speak English and
perhaps none of them ever bothered to learn (-: Ewok Chauvinism :-). Since
C3PO can speak both languages, perhaps he will be drafted as narator. I think
a combination of naration and subtitles would be most efective.

I seem to remember a Thanksgiving special a few years ago, featuring
Chewbacca and his Wookiee(sp?) family. I watched it, and wasn't too
impressed, although there were one or two points about Wookiee home
life that were interesting. I have no idea how involved Lucas was
with the production, other than giving permission.

I don't mind merchandising these things; what troubles me is the
mindless eagerness with which today's children - and parents - seem
to leap onto every new item to come out. (sigh) I suppose it keeps
the advertising people employed.

I don't believe that Lucas had anything directly to do with
the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL that you remember. Personally,
I thought it was dreadful, with the exception of one part:
Chewie's son is watching a cartoon on a little monitor. The
cartoon is a tale of Han, Chewie, Luke, Leia, and the droids
in their first meeting with Boba Fett (this was the first
appearance of Fett ever). In addition to having an interesting
story, the cartoon had a bizarre art style that I rather liked.

The most mercenary movie recently is probably Gremlins -- have you EVER seen
a movie character more perfectly designed to become a toy than the first
little gremlin, "Gizmo" (Mogwai)? He was such a fuzzy fat little teddy
bear it was hard to believe they could make him act convincingly. They
must have designed it as a toy first and then figured out how to animate
it.

I'm totally ashamed. Long, long ago, in a galaxy far
far away, I "believed" in Spielberg, Lucas and the rest. I
fear now that my trust was misplaced.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH MADE-FOR-TOY THINGS IN MY LIFE!
THE #^%$*^&()*$%@*)*(^ EWOKS AND %$*%)&*()^#!^ GIZMOS ARE SO
	&*^%*&% CUTE IT'S AARGHH!!!!#!@$^%^
Quite sorry, but had to get it out.
