77.0. "New Lensmen Stories" by PARROT::BLOTCKY () Thu May 24 1984 01:03

There are three new "LENSMEN" books written by David A. Kyle.
They are "authorized" by Smith's heirs and are titled:
THE DRAGON LENSMAN
LENSMAN FROM RIGEL
Z-LENSMAN
and are about the three, non tellurian, second stage lensman.
There will supposedly be more.
I read all three and enjoyed them, though they differed in quality.

I also have read them and enjoyed them. They aren't quite up "Doc" Smith's
standards, but are still good reading about characters and situations which
we have come to enjoy.
77.2Anybody got them?ENOVAX::BARRETTBeam me up LordFri Mar 23 1990 13:357
I have tried to locate some these books (and the possibility of a fouth) and
have had no luck. I have the Dragon Lensman from when it came out - but
they all seem to be out of print. Can anyone help me? Perhaps I could
borrow from someone just to read them?

This is as good a place as any ;),
has any one heard/seen anything on the Japanese animation "The Lens" ??
I have heard a report here in Oz from a friend who was watching either CNN or
NBC(?) Today, and they had a 'still' from the animation of (supposedly)
Virgil Samms, Rod "the Rock" Kinnison & Port Admiral Clayton (?) walking
onto the deck of the (??) with a number of Rigellians around "The Tank".

Release dates ? Avaliability ? Is it any good ? Anything !

re: -.1

Hi Hazza,

The name of the movie is not "The Lens" but "The Lensman". It's
playing tonite at New York's Film Forum where they are having a Japanese
animation festival for the next 2 weeks. I understsnd it's loosely based on
EE Doc Smith's Lensman series so there are bound to be changes. I'm going
to see it tonite. I'll report on it after I see it.

I finally saw this last nite at the New YOrk Film Forum along with an
episode of "Speed Racer" - an old cartoon series. Boy did that bring back
some memories.

I was impressed with the film - it was a fascinating blend of computer graphics
and cartoon animation. But I'm told that this film is primitive compared to
more recent works like "Akira" for example. But since it was my first time
seeing this I thought it was pretty good.

It's been a long time since I've read E.E.Doc Smith's books, but I do remember
enough to see that they deviated completely from the original stories. The
story-line came closer to Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica rather than the
original Lensman stories. The characters didn't have the depth they had in
the novels and the plot was too simple.

All in all I enjoyed this more for the animation rather than the story.

Thanks King,
appreciate you taking time to post that. Hmmmm... don't think I'll
rush out to see it - bit of a pity though. Why take a perfectly good space-
opera, and louse it up with StarWars and BattleStar ???
