67.0. "Ford:Final Reflection" by RAVEN1::HOLLABAUGH () Wed May 09 1984 12:38

OK. I admit it. I'm a closet Star Trek novel reader. I keep reading them
hoping that a gem will come along. So far, the novels have ranged from really
rotten to pretty good but if it weren't for my affection for Star Trek I pro-
bably wouldn't think so. Until now. John M. Ford's Star Trek novel is a gem.
(At last!) This one is good enough to stand on it's own and not rely on your
love for the old series. It's different from the other ST novels in that Kirk
and Spock and McCoy and those only play small parts. (VERY small parts.) The
story revolves around (Of all things) a Klingon warrior. Much thought was put
into how the Klingon culture was portrayed. It is very convincing and explains
much. Star Trek lovers will like it. Ford obviously knows his ST. (As a
matter of fact he ties up some loose ends and explains some things from the
series. F'instance: Did ever wonder why their transporter beam was a different
color and gave off a different sound than the Feds' did? He gives an
explanation in the course of the story.) (The story takes place back in the days
when transporters were first being developed.) (The scene in which the Klingons
and Feds find out about each other's transporters is a classic!)

This is a must for Star Trek lovers and likers! Even those who weren't super
crazy about the series might want to give it a shot.

All in all I found it an interesting and enjoyable read.

Jus finished reading The Final Reflection.......I have to agree that most of
the existing novels are mediocre. The only exceptions are the movie
novelizations and perhaps the New Voyages.

If you are interested in more of the background that John Ford created for
his novel.....go find a copy of the sub-module "The Klingons" for the
Star Trek: The Role Playing Game by FASA. It contains pages of information
that details what is only hinted at it the novel.

Agreed. This is the only novel based on the old series in which the
Klingon does not appear as a cardboard villain.
