59.0. "Lichtenberg's and Lorrah's Sime/Gen series" by RAVEN1::HOLLABAUGH () Thu Apr 19 1984 11:49

There is a great series that I've read over the past year or so. I
can't remember how many books there are or even most of their names, but they
are good stuff. The Sime/Gen series is written by Jean Lorrah and Jaqueline
Lichtenberg(sp?). There are about earth(maybe) in the distant future. Humans
have mutated into two species. The Gens produce a substance that they don't
use to live. The Simes can't produce this substance(selyn BTW) but must have it
to survive. The catch is that the way they simes get selyn is to extract it
from gens with special tentacle like ograns that lay along their arms and'
unfortunatley the gen dies in the process. Needless to say, this makes for
a low cooperation level from the gens. The stories center around characters
(both sime and gen) that are working to find a way for selyn transfer to take
place without death.
I think the authors have done an excellent job of taking an unusual concept
and running with it. The society that they create around this is sometimes
depressing, sometimes uplifting, always beleivable.
I would go back and look up the titles of the books except that I don't
own them. I've only seen one of them in the bookstore. (Not the first one of
course!) I got them all from the library. They may be a little hard to
find, but definately worth the effort! Some titles are Unto Zeor, Forever,
The Mahogany Trinrose, Channel Destiny,... RenSime [sic] rings a bell, but I
can't remeber if I've read this one or if it is the title of the next one
to be published.

I loved them! Consider this a rave review.

tlh
P.S. I'll try to get back to the library someday soon and see if I can get
the titles or any more info on them for you.
