Conference noted::sf

I've really enjoyed them too.  The Illuminatus game is a lot of fun also.

I knew there was a musical of "Illuminatus," as well as the trilogy,
but I didn't know about a game...what is it and how do I get it?

The Illuminatus game is put out by "Steve Jackson Games".  If you live
near enough, The Games People Play and the Science Fantasy Bookstore
(both in Cambridge) carry it.  If those stores aren't convenient, I
can look up and post the address of SJG (somewhere in Austin, TX).
The basic game and two supplements are $6 each.  That's overpriced
for the supplements but if you love the basic game (I do!), then
they're worth it.

aaarrrgggghhh!!!! What the #$%$#$%#$%# are you talking about?  What books 
has the aforementioned author written?  Would you recommend them to someone 
who has read every McCaffrey, Norton, Heinlein, Tolkien, and lots of Asimov,
Dabbles in the old stuff (E.R. Burroughs, E.E."Doc"Smith) and spend her 
entire salary on stuff from the SF Book Club?

The Illuminatis Trilogy is *very* strange and more than a little confusing;
but what would you expect from a books whose main premise is that every
conspiracy tale in the world is simultaneously true?  Its a lot of fun.  Its
not hard SF (of course neither are several of the authors you mention).

And the more recent "Schrodinger's Cat" trilogy is, among other things, an
attempt to emobdy three major theories of modern physics (which I don't
claim to understand).  One book covers various events according to one
theory, another bood covers almost the same events according to another
theory, and the third covers very similar territory according to a third
theory.  I hope that what I just wrote makes some sense.  Meanwhile, the
books are very funny, and I enjoyed them long before I understood that
they had much to do with physics.

Wilson hangs out with some of the "new wave" physicists in the Berkeley
area, including Jack Sarfatti.  He also is close to Timothy Leary.  And
he has gone through initiation and training in a number of serious cults.
He seems to believe in tantric sex and other Aleister Crowley-type magick.
Wilson practices "guerilla ontology" in his work (what is reality, anyhow?)

Another novel he wrote is "Masks of the Illuminati."  I have read some of
his non-fiction, which I find fascinating--"Cosmic Trigger" is an excellent
book.  "The Illuminatus Papers" is a collection of short papers.  I have yet
to read "Prometheus Rising" and a few other books whose titles I forget.

In short, you probably will like Robert Anton Wilson if you believe, as
Firesign Theater has proclaimed, that "Everything you know is wrong!"
Or if you're a member of the Church of the Sub-Genius...

I know those feelings--too much too read, too little money to buy books.
I patronize libraries alot, but none of them seem to have Robert Anton
Wilson books.  You can find some of his newer fiction in the SF sections of
larger bookstores in the Boston area, but in most smaller bookstores they
have never heard of Wilson.  A good source around here for his non-fiction
and other wierd stuff is the Alchemist Music store in Hudson.  I wonder
where you would get these types of books in SC...

  Thanks. I'll be up to Bedford for a course the first week of March.  I 
have some friends in Hudson that I'm sure I'll be getting down to see some-
time while I'm up there.  Where in Hudson is the Alchemist music store?
Bear in mind that my knowledge of Hudson consists of driving in on 62 from
Bedford and never leaving it since my friends live on 62.

The address of Alchemist is 196 Washington Street...I *think* that is the
same as Route 85...it is the road that runs between the rotary at the center
of Hudson and the front entrance to HUO.  The shop is on the same side of
the road as the HUO facility, opposite a supermarket/shopping center.  I
don't believe they sell fiction there, but they have a couple of Wilson's
more recent non-fiction books (which I haven't felt rich enough to buy) plus
other wierd/mystical stuff by the likes of Aleister Crowley.  By the way,
Alchemist is mainly a health food store, and they also sell DMSO among
other things.  As DRAGON::SPERT mentioned several responses back, there are
good places to buy SF, comix, and just about any other book in Cambridge.

By the way, since it's been a long while since the previous contributions
to this note, THE ILLUMINATUS TRILOGY has been reissued in one volume as
a trade paperback.

Finding SCHRODINGER'S CAT isn't the problem; finding THE SEX MAGICIANS is.
The latter is a real, honest-to-god porno fnord novel written by Wilson
that ties into the Illuminatus series. And it's *really* funny.

released _Magicats_ short story collection (SF cat stories!).

	I was in a book store thwe other day and noticed what seems to
	be a new series of Iluminati books. Something subtitled "The
	Historical Illuminatus Trilogy" If memory serves, they were
	first published in 86, with the Lynx paperbacks in 89. I saw
	the first two paperbacks of this trilogy. Has anyone read or 
	heard about these? Is the third book out yet or forthcoming?

	I heard Wilson on a radio talk show recently. He was very
	interesting and made some good points. He has a healthy
	(unyuppy-like) paranoia and maintains a horizontal 
	(inter-relational) view of education. His books are not 
	meant to be taken literally, but more as entertaining fables.

Well I reckon that if we all choose to believe the post is a hoax
then he's still alive. It's obviously just a failed magickal attempt
to convince us to write ourselves into a reality in which Wilson
is dead. Don't let it work!

Well, R. A. Wilson is slated to lead a discussion at the Association for
Consciousness Exploration WinterStar 1994 symposium at Atwood Lake this
February 24-27, and death usually has a nasty way of cancelling some people's
lecture plans. I think the rumours of his death have been greatly exaggerated.

On February 21, 1994, noted science-fiction author and libertarian
activist Robert Anton Wilson was found dead in his home, apparently
of a heart attack (see the Los Angeles Times, Feb. 22). His
death had come unexpectedly, and there had been no signs of ill health
beforehand.

        Wilson did not die of natural causes. He was assassinated.
Earlier on that day, Wilson was injected with a time-delay poison
based on shellfish toxin, by an agent of the CIA's special
SUPER-SECRET BLACK OPERATIONS SQUAD, using a special microscopic
needle made of a plastic which dissolves in the body without a
trace. Wilson's body had been immediately taken and cremated and
the usuial step of an autopsy had been bypassed, ON ORDERS FROM
ABOVE.

        It is clear why the power$ that be wanted Wilson dead.
Wilson was a dangerous element; the governments can only govern
if the majority does not question the system (whoever currently
"rules" does not matter). The troublesome minority can be dealt
with discreetly, by means of EXECUTIVE ACTION (assassination),
which is what happened with Wilson. Wilson gained too wide an
audience, and his anti-statist, anti-government, pro-drug
views were becoming too accepted. He had to be killed.
Earlier the same agencies (the CIA, NRO, DEA and CFR/TLC/Bilderberg
BOLSHEVIK SHADOW GOVERNMENT) had LSD/mind-expansion advocate Dr.
Timothy Leary "neutralised" by injecting him with a neurotoxin
which DESTROYS THE MIND, and ARTIFICIALLY INDUCES A STATE
SIMILAR TO SENILITY. This form of chemical lobotomy has been used on
dissidents for some time and has served the power$-that-be well.
They have the means to induce psychosic, suicidal/homicidal
tendencies, paranoia, religious fervor and madness in
dissidents by chemical means (MK-ULTRA and other CLA$$IFIED
PROJECT$).

Oh come on now. If you're going to perpetuate the wind-up at least
have the courage to put your own name behind it.

In any case Robert Anton Wilson's death would be a bit like that
of old Ben Kenobi when he was struck down by Darth Vader a long
time ago...

Tuesday February 22nd 1994 5:00 pm CST: I just got off the phone with CC
at the Association for Consciousness Exploration, and this morning's
message in alt.slack and alt.discordia, a forged obit from the LA Times,
is a cruel, cruel hoax.  As of about 15 minutes ago, CC tells me that Bob
Wilson is alive and well, and still planning on attending this weekend's
WinterStar.

Hoax obits, especially for one of the leading figures in American religion
and philosophy today, are a particularly disgusting and cruel form of
prank.

being dead or alive... Of course, until somebody actually perceived his

Subject: RAW obit premature

In response to the net rumor, I phoned the Wilsons.  Bob does a running bit
about Uncle Bob's <some other wierd business> and frozen yogurt parlor.  This
time it was Uncle Bob's Zombie Factory and Forzen Yogurt Parlor, which was
wonderfully appropriate, but provided no information.  I've never called
someone to ask if they're dead, so left sort of a vague message.

So next I called a 25-year mutual friend who lives two blocks down the street,
who told me that Bob is flying to Ohio tomorrow for a speaking gig, and then
going to Chicago, where Arlen is meeting him for some sort of promo for a movie
he just finished with Rudy Rucker.

And Judy told me that Arlen is *very* annoyed about the condolence calls she's
been getting.

I'll tell him about the invitation to the wake at MIT, though; I'm sure he'll
enjoy being invited.
