1394.0. "Shark attack in Sydney harbour" by OPCO::TSG_SJM (Steve McGinley - OMS Sydney Australia) Thu Feb 06 1997 15:04

Several days ago in Sydney harbour, quite a fair way into the harbour
actually, a solo rower was thrown from her boat after a rather large
shark went for her boat. After she made it back to shore, large teeth
marks were found in the rear of the boat. Speculation has it is that
it was either a Bull or Dusky shark.

Over the past years, the water pollution levels in Sydney harbour have
dropped quite considerably, due to new strict government controls, and
this has lead to a large increase in school fish entering the harbour,
and this also attracts the sharks.

There was even a report a few weeks ago, that a Mako was caught inside
the harbour, and 5 meter Tiger sharks have been spotted near the Heads,
    the entrance to the harbour.

Don't have to travel far now to do some interesting shark diving.

1394.1You're not at the end of the foodchain anymore....LEXSS1::JOHNHCFri Feb 07 1997 09:4010
Any information about what kind of boat she was rowing, the color of
the hull, her speed, or her rowing style? Was she sitting still or
    moving at the time?

My understanding of the reason why sharks attack more surfers and
swimmers than divers is that under certain circumstances, they can look
like a seal or other edible mammal from below. I'm wondering how this
    rower's boat might have looked?

1394.2Romantic shark?JAMIN::GOBLEFri Feb 07 1997 09:485
Sounds like a particularly romantic shark might have had a taste
for the shape of the boat ("young, slim shark with pearly white
skin and buoyant personality wants to froth and frolic").

On the subject of sharks, i would recommend Underwater World at
Moloolaba on the Sunshine coast for an excellent 30 min of
    entertainment.

For a fee of 50 dollars you get to moonwalk in the tank alongside
various species of creatures including 13ft grey nurse sharks.

Unusually high amounts of sharks were reported along the Sunshine coast
when i was there in December which didn't come to light until a
surfer had a lucky escape when he suffered lacerations to his ankle and
foot. This happened just a few miles north of Caloundra.

    Re .1

It was one of those small single rowing boats, and she was just out for
her morning row about 100m from shore. Apparently a friend helped her
back in her boat, and she continued on for another 30 minutes before
returning to shore, and then discovered the teeth marks.

    Re.3

Yep, did you see the 4 metre Hammerhead they caught 300 metres of Kirra
Beach on the weekend. It got caught in the nets, but died before they
    could release it.

1394.5Local diving in Brisbane?KAMLIA::mdmMaria D. MaggioWed Feb 12 1997 08:419
This is slightly off-topic of the shark attack in Sydney, but I'm
looking for info about diving in and around Brisbane. I've got
a good friend headed to the University of Queensland next week,
and she's looking for some info about the local diving. Does anyone
in this notes conference dive that area regularly?

			Thanks,
				Maria

    Maria,

Can't really help with the Brisbane area, but about 3 hours south of
Brisbane a site called Jurien Rocks at Byron Bay, is worth the effort.

Would definitely recommend to your friend that they head north of
Brisbane up to the Great Barrier Reef and do some diving up there, and
I imagine that there would be some nice sites an 1 or 2 drive north of
    Brisbane.

If you fancy some offshore diving, give "Scuba World" located at
the Wharf in Moloolaba a phone.

1394.8More shark incidences from downunderOPCO::TSG_SJMSteve McGinley - OMS Sydney AustraliaMon Mar 03 1997 15:3014
Another couple of shark incidences over the past week from downunder.

    1) Girl bitten by shark whilst swimming in canal on the Gold Coast,
Queensland. Report didn't mention any shark type, but Bull sharks
have been responsible in the past for attacks in the canals of the
       Gold Coast.

    2) Diver attacked on the surface near Hook Island, on the Great Barrier
Reef. From what I have heard, a nasty one, but thankfully the
diver, who happened to be a tourist from Italy is OK. Reports had
the shark type as a 3 metre Grey Nurse, but I find that I little
hard to believe. This area is frequented by Tigers.
