849.0. "Should we worry ? Alternatives ?" by RDGENG::uksint9.reo.dec.com::ATTWOOL (Its the end of the world and i feel fine) Tue Jun 03 1997 10:28

So now it seems that destiny has been set. What are the alternative
products to CA Unicenter ?

Has anyone tried to pool a table of Alternative products ?

Has anyone compiled a list of companies that currently are using
POLYCENTER products ?

We are/were just starting a project with a part of British Telecom
that is currently using VCS, we were going to use PCM and Systems
Watchdog but now it looks like we are going to have to back peddle.
Fast.

Should anyone be worried about using Unicenter TNG ? As long as it
fits the functionality required.

There is a 3rd party product that is similiar to PCM, according to my
contacts in BT.

BT looked at TNG and decided it didn't fit what they wanted.

Please let me know what that product is. We have found replacements for
all products except PCM and AssetWORKs.

Having had a meeting with BT today, we explained the situation
regarding PCM / TNG etc.. And though they seemed quite happy to carry
on with just PCM in the project, though they were a little concerned
around the future migration path.
But they intend not to upgrade the OpenVMS systems from VMS 7.1 to
7.2 for a projected 3 years ( because of downtime costs etc.. )

Around the Systems Watchdog area this is where the most concerns
came in, mainly around the timeframe that would provide support for
VMS 7.1 be available ! September doesn't meet our particular project
goal. It got bounced from the project.

Lets hope that the timeframes for PCM are still on schedule.

Have a talk with Tim Ellison in the OpenVMS Group. Tim has identified some
Watchdog alternatives.

Re last few replies, plenty of alternatives to Watchdog, BMC Patrol and
Heroics Robomon for a start.

However the main question .0 was about alternatives to TNG.
There are basic choices to make:

1) for enterprise management, the choice is Unicenter TNG or Tivoli.
Don't just think of them as a list of products, and seek to compare with point
products, think of them as an enterprise management solution.

2) or you choose best of breed point products and go through the complexity of
how you try to integrate them all!
3) or you customise a solution for selective technologies and again have to
integrate and support it.

POLYCENTER is dead (RIP) and I feel we really do now have to look to
Unicenter TNG as the first choice solution. Its time to move on and share our
practical delivery experiences with how best to use TNG.

So what is the alternative to PSDC/PSPA specifically what 3rd party product
use the IOPERFORM $QIO interface to measure disk response time, log files
being hit, gather terminal IO stats, etc.

Have a conversation with Wayne Jones in the Software Partner's Group.
