842.0. "CA POLYCENTER Press Release" by ZEKE::BURTON (Jim Burton, DTN 381-6470) Wed May 28 1997 16:15
CA EXTENDS UNICENTER TNG TO FULLY SUPPORT OpenVMS

Offers POLYCENTER Users Free Upgrade
To Next-Generation Multiplatform Management Solution
ISLANDIA, N.Y., May 19, 1997--Computer Associates International, Inc.
(CA) today announced that it has fully integrated management of
OpenVMS resources into its industry-leading multiplatform Unicenter
TNG management solution. This ground-breaking integration will enable
OpenVMS users to manage their legacy Digital systems in concert with
their overall computing environments, rather than treating them as a
separate "island" of management.
To encourage users to experience the benefits of integrating
management of OpenVMS resources into their overall enterprise
management solution, CA is offering a free upgrade to Unicenter TNG to
users of selected POLYCENTER products.
Because the OpenVMS extensions to Unicenter TNG encompass the
functions of several POLYCENTER products -- including POLYCENTER
Console Manager, POLYCENTER Systems Watchdog, POLYCENTER Scheduler and
POLYCENTER Performance Advisor -- this upgrade will provide these
POLYCENTER users with significant new management capabilities. For
example, a user of POLYCENTER Systems Watchdog would gain additional
functionality of Console Manager, Scheduler and Performance Advisor at
no additional cost.
"It's terribly inefficient for IT departments to continue treating
their OpenVMS systems in a totally separate manner from the rest of
their computing environment," said Mark Stabler, CA vice president.
"With Unicenter TNG, they can now perform troubleshooting,
performance monitoring, job scheduling, data backup and other key
management tasks in a unified manner across all their systems
platforms -- including OpenVMS, MVS, UNIX, AS/400, OS/2 and Windows
NT."
According to Stabler, the need to be able to manage OpenVMS in
conjunction with the rest of the computing environment reflects the
changing role of OpenVMS systems. "More and more often, we're seeing
legacy systems such as OpenVMS being used as the high-end server for
distributed and/or intranet-style business solutions," he said. "To
get a true end-to-end view of how these solutions are performing, it's
critical to be able to work with all the platforms involved from a
single integrated console."
Wes Melling, vice president of the Windows NT and OpenVMS Systems
Group at Digital Equipment Corporation, said, "Today's announcement
from CA will provide significant and expanded benefits to POLYCENTER
customers which value the availability and scalability offered by
OpenVMS. We commend CA for the outstanding work they have done by
incorporating POLYCENTER and OpenVMS functionality into the broader
Unicenter TNG solution."
"By incorporating POLYCENTER functionality within the Unicenter TNG
enterprise solution, CA has created a strong value proposition for the
OpenVMS community," said Jeannie M. Freis, senior analyst, Aberdeen
Group, Inc., Boston. "Unicenter TNG enhances user productivity
through a common interface for end-to-end management of multiple
platforms, therefore reducing costs. Many CIOs will smile when they
see bottom line reductions in integration, training, management and
maintenance costs as well."
The announcement of the OpenVMS management integration and the free
upgrade offer was made at the DECUS conference in Cincinnati, Ohio.
