837.0. "Delta time problem and PSDC" by OSOV03::KAGEYAMA (I Got Rhythm!) Fri May 09 1997 03:30

I was forwarded the mail mentioning POLYCENTER data collector has a
problem caused by OpenVMS delta time. The mail does not point out
what kind of problem would be happened under what kind of situations.

Can someone ask CA and tell us more details?

My guesss is that the problem would not be exhibited May 19 1997 which
is caused by UNIX based time and OpenVMS delta time limitation, but
would be caused by scheduling PSDC more than 10000 days or 26 years five
months 19 days. If the former is the case and PSDC will stopp or
cause some serious problems, we have to stop all data collectors unless
applying OpenVMS delta time patches and reboot.

  Time might be running out.

  Best regards,

  - Kazunori

Chris,

Here is the summary of the May 19,1997 Delta-time problem impact for
our POLYCENTER products on OpenVMS.

Products Not Impacted:

	Scheduler
	Console Manager
	Performance Advisor
	Accounting Chargeback
AssetWORKS Agent (John Lawson will confirm this later).

Products Impacted:

For the products listed below, the OpenVMS patch (ALPLIBR05_070 on
AXP, and VAXLIBR06_070 on VAX)
solves the problem. The patch, when applied, recommends a reboot. Our
products do not require another reboot.

	Performance Data Collector
	System Watchdog (Agent and Consolidator)

RE: delta time

I have been working with CA Engineering on this issue. They are well aware
of what is going on and they have performed the testing to know what happens
if anything. Go to the CSC if you want answers.

Most production systems does not allow immediate reboots and they would
like to prolong the reboots at least to the next summer vacation.

837.4Is there a 19 May time bomb here, or a general delta-time problem?TIKVAH::ARTHURLampert, Israel Software SupportWed May 14 1997 12:437
I second the questions in .0. I can't go to the CSC; I am the CSC.

I need to tell customers whether there is a time-bomb going off on 19
May, if I can.

Arthur

OK I give up. I have requested this info from CA and as soon as I receive
it, I will post it here. I feel the CSC needs to get a better link into
CA so you can get these types of notifications sooner. To have the product
manager chase down this type of information indicates the support system
is not functioning properly.

837.7That's the same memo as in .0TIKVAH::ARTHURLampert, Israel Software SupportThu May 15 1997 03:0711
That's the same memo posted in .0, that we recieved about 10 days ago. It does
not answer the questions .0 asked.

Jim,

I agree that the support process is broken. Apparently, the only way to
communicate with CA is via IPMT.

I guess I give up too.

Arthur
837.8ZEKE::BURTONJim Burton, DTN 381-6470Thu May 15 1997 09:066
I sent Arthur an e-mail this morning giving him the names and phone numbers
of the CA engineers responsible for the delta time issue. I don't want
Digital people from around the world calling CA like this, so I did not post
the names and numbers here. Hoepfully, Arthur will post the results here.

I haven't been able to get the right people on the phone, so I sent them

However, we are heading into a weekend here. I won't be back in the office
until Sunday the 18th.
837.10No reply from CA; Did any customers report a problem?TIKVAH::ARTHURLampert, Israel Software SupportMon May 26 1997 05:069
I never had a response from CA to my voice mail or e-mail.

None of my customers reported a problem with PSDC. Did anyone else
hear of PSDC failing after 19 May?

We weren't able to check for problems here. All of our systems had
the Delta Time patch installed before the 19th.

Nope.

I didn't apply the patch to my VS4000/90 running OpenVMS V6.2 and PSDC
V2.2, but it still works after May 19th.
