822.0. "Help for customers who need current operating system support" by ZEKE::BURTON (Jim Burton, DTN 381-6470) Fri Mar 14 1997 12:33

We are in the process of quickly developing a program to help customers who
need to run POLYCENTER software on OpenVMS V7.0-7.1 and Digital UNIX V4.0+
operating systems. We hope to have this program pulled together by Monday
March 17th with customer beginning to get the code within a week and a half.

Here is how we feel the program will work. The customer, Digital Sales rep
or partner will FAX or send e-mail to me telling me the customer name,
company, address, phone, FAX and the POLYCENTER product(s). The customer
may have to sign something or FAX us a copy of their license certificate for
the old version (process is TBD). CA will ship out a CDROM with the new
version code and a timeout license PAK with an expiration date in early
June. The customer loads the software and runs with the temporary PAK until
they receive their permanent license key either through their support
service or by purchasing the new version. The software on the CDROM will be
exactly the same as the new release, it will not be a beta copy so the
customer will simply need to install their permanent license PAK. There will
be no cost to the customer for this program.

Please be gathering up the account information for those who will need to
take advantage of this program and get ready to send me that information
next week (March 17-19). Don't send it now because I'm not set up to handle
it. This is just an advance notice so people can gather this information.

    Jim,
Will Digitals Customer Software License Authority be able to generate
PAKS for all of the products? If not, then how will we obtain PAKS?

    Regards,

No, all PAKs will be generated by CA. The kit that will go out to the
customers will contain a CDROM and a license PAK (probably hardcopy).

Dan, I would suggest that you request a copy of this for the CSC so you can be
ready if customers call.

One other thing.... This is a product management program that is independent
from the MCS product updates. When the product is formally available, MCS will
send out updates to customer who have support contracts. Those customers will
receive another CDROM (code will be identical to mine), a permanent license
PAK, and hardcopy docs.

Thanks much Jim! There is also a potential for abuse with this
program. Customers that really don't need the "pre-release" will
invariably try to obtain it and not wait for the MCS update. Don't get
me wrong, this is great that CA is doing this. I just don't want it
costing Digital and CA more than it should.

That's true. We're willing to risk giving out a few extra CDROMs to insure
we take care of the customers who really need it now.

Remember there is more than the one CSC - I assume that .0 applies
    world-wide.
