POLYCENTER Licensing

POLYCENTER employs two types of licensing, Traditional and Concurrent.

Traditional licenses are flat priced, that is, they can be used for the same
price on any processor regardless of size or power. This license is
sometimes referred to as unlimited (Can be used anywhere).

A Concurrent license type for POLYCENTER is slightly different than the
industry definition of Concurrent. In other words, it is not a license that
is assigned to a user when they log on and then becomes available to another
user when the original user logs off. For POLYCENTER, a Concurrent license
indicates a single connection.

See the specific product descriptions for more detailed information.

POLYCENTER Console Manager (PCM): This product has two license types -
Traditional Unlimited and Concurrent. The licenses reside on the system
monitoring the environment not the device being monitored. The monitoring of
a device is done via the RS-232 port. One Concurrent license is needed for
one RS-232 port connection. The PCM Unlimited license can monitor up to 200
devices (i.e. the technical limit).

Since you need one license/port the choice of Unlimited or Concurrent
license type is simple. If you have more than 106 monitored port
connections, or plan to grow to more than that number, then the Unlimited
license makes the most sense.

Note: From Console Manager's standpoint, everything it can monitor is a
"device", whether that's an actual system like a VAXstation or an Alpha
server, or a device such as an air conditioner, a printer or a 3rd party
device. So long as the "device" has a console connection (a tape storage
robot for example is a device with some intelligent computing power
built in, but it is not a computer system) that meets the RS-232C
requirements, Console Manager can monitor it. In addition, Console Manager
can, while monitoring a system, also capture the events that processes, such
as Scheduler jobs, send out through the console mode. In this case, no
additional license is required to monitor this application since the
HARDWARE that these events are coming from has already been licensed.

POLYCENTER System Watchdog (PSW): This product has two components, a
consolidator (Server) and an Agent. The Server runs on OpenVMS and Digital
UNIX. The Agents run on Open VMS, Digital UNIX, HP-UX, IBM AIX, and Sun OS.
There are two Server license types - Traditional Unlimited and Concurrent.
The Traditional license can connect to an unlimited number of agents.

The Concurrent license connects to one agent only. Since you need one
license per connection to an agent, the choice of Unlimited or Concurrent
Server license type is simple. If you have more than 16 Systems, or plan to
grow to more than that number, to be monitored then the Unlimited Server
license economically makes the most sense.

You need one agent for each monitored SYSTEM. The agent can then monitor an
unlimited number of events on that system, those events can be from the CPU,
memory, process, queues, or the clients own applications. Think of it as
licensing the HARDWARE. When you have the one piece of hardware equipment
properly licensed, then anything that goes on within that hardware is
covered by that same license.

Note - If you want to monitor the System on which the Server resides you
will need an agent for that System

POLYCENTER Scheduler: Components include a Server and an Agent and use the
Traditional License. A Server license is needed for each System that will
act as the Server. For example, in a three node OpenVMS Cluster, you may
have one System act as the Server. So you would need one Server license.
However, if you want to do failover from the Scheduler Server to another
Server then you will need a second Server License. Similarly, if you want to
do load balancing in the cluster you will need a Server License for all
nodes you wish to balance. So for Scheduler in a three node cluster in which
you want failover and load balancing then three Server Licenses make sense.

In addition to the Server License you will need an Agent license for each
node on which you wish to run a job. Note: Each Server License comes with
one Agent license.

POLYCENTER Accounting Chargeback for OpenVMS uses the operating system
accounting files to provide usage reports in a cluster. One Traditional
license in the cluster will allow collection of information across the
cluster. Accounting Chargeback is not available on Digital UNIX.

POLYCENTER Performance Advisor licensing varies by platform. The product
consists of an Advisor (Server, where analysis and reports run) and a Data
Collector (Agent).

The Performance Advisor and Performance Data Collector license uses a one to
many management configuration. You need a Data Collector license on every
system that you want to collect data from. You need one Performance Advisor
license for the system on which to run the monitoring and reports.

Performance Advisor for Open VMS only has one type of server license, and
that is a flat priced license. You can run on any size processor and you can
analyze performance data from one data collector or 200 data collectors. The
price is still the same. The Performance Data Collector agent is also a
flat priced Traditional license.

On Digital UNIX there is a Traditional Unlimited and a Concurrent license.
The Unlimited license is the same as for OpenVMS. The Concurrent license is
slightly different. It is a one to one pairing that allows you to designate
a single system to collect historical data from the target system. The
target system is named during installation and cannot be changed without
reinstalling the Advisor. The purpose of a Concurrent license is to allow a
small installation to do performance analysis at a reasonable price.

POLYCENTER AssetWORKS (PAW): PAW uses a break the seal licensing model .
Clients need one license to reside on each system. There are five components
with PAW: a Windows NT Server, Enterprise Client, PC Client, Proxy Domain
Client and Netware Inventory Plus Client. Packages are available for
multiple purchases.

AssetWORKS requires Microsoft's System Management Server (SMS) as a
prerequisite on the PAW Windows NT Server and a SMS client on all desktops
where PAW PC clients reside.

A PAW NT Server license is needed for each primary and secondary site
server. You need a license for any client (PC and Enterprise) that reports
inventory to the site server.

The Enterprise Client includes:
UNIX Client which automatically collects inventory information. It
schedules and performs health monitoring and installs layered software
on UNIX systems and automatically performs prescribed actions as
required. The UNIX platforms include Digital UNIX, HP-UX, SUN OS, IBM
    AIX and SUN Solaris.

OpenVMS which automatically collects inventory information and schedules
and installs layered software on Open VMS systems.

You need one Enterprise Client for each managed system.

The PC Client detects software applications running on clients and gathers
and consolidates the application usage data. It also monitors defined system
resources and automatically performs prescribed actions as required. There
are PC clients for Windows NT, OS/2, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Windows for
Workgroups, MS-DOS and MAC. You need one PC Client for each managed system.

The Proxy Domain Client enables you to reach PC Clients in remote LANs
without the requirement to install Windows NT at the remote site. The Proxy
Domain Client allows PC clients running on a remote LAN to pass information
to your PAW server. The Proxy Domain Client runs on a UNIX or NetWare server
and you need to buy a Client for each Server reporting to AssetWORKS.

The NetWare Inventory Plus Client enables the execution of SMS jobs directly
on a NetWare server and extends the inventory reported from the NetWare
server. This allows the inclusion of the Inventory data in the management
information. You need to buy a l Clients with PAW V2.0 will have to buy an
upgrade license for Version 3.0. This license is available from CA for only
this version. In the future (V3.0 and beyond), clients must be under
maintenance to get the next version.
